Nothing like being startled by everyone’s mobile phone and the house security system blaring tornado warnings this AM. That passed quickly enough, but that hard rain keeps coming, plus thunder mumbles.

Our area north of Annapolis lost power around 10 AM. The house Generac kicked in to power the all-important well and sump pumps, the key circuit with refrigerators, a few kitchen lights and geo-thermal HVAC, so we are good for now. We could actually run ovens and washer-dryer, but we minimize power tasks to extend generator max run time. After an extended winter power outage several years ago, when we were sleeping in sleeping bags with the dogs in front of the gas fireplace, and scooping water out of filled tubs to gravity flush the toilets on upper floors, I gave DH “The Look” and said we aren’t doing this again. We traded that year’s vacation for the integrated generator running off the big underground propane tank in the backyard. Worth every penny.

How is everyone in the impact area doing?

ree - PORT!

I'm not in the area, but DS reported heavy rain and wind whining through the windows of Bancroft. He actually said it was nice to hear. Bancroft is so big and solid that the last time it rained he couldn't hear it, and he wished he could. It's the little things... (btw, that set up sounds amazing!)

Power’s back. Sun’s out. More squalls headed here throughout the day.

Pretty windy and rainy out here in Northwest NJ. Right now there is a lull but we aren't supposed to have center passing for a few hours so
this is not the end of it. Lots of local power outtages.

15 miles? south of Lejeune. Made it fine in our east side of the eye. Plenty of wind but not too much rain. A bunch of branches, needles, and pine cones down. The two lovely young gals next door cleaned up our yard of the bigger stuff. Just twigs and leaves left. I told them I appreciated it but they didn't have to do that. They said, "We're doing it anyway." We came out and helped, then the Marine aviator next door told us both to put our debris on his pile and his lawn service would haul it off for us. My wife and I must look old and decepit, but its nice to have such great neighbors.

My upperclass reported “what hurricane?”

Im sure he slept through it ... figures. Don’t get hurricanes in the Midwest. Would have been neat to experience one at least, awake 🙄

One's enough. Avg of 1 a year for 30 years is more than enough. Thankfully, despite having trees land on my vehicle or leaning against the house, we've never suffered serious damage. We've been lucky.

No Hurricane here in the good old Midwest.. bright and sunny!

I had a couple good hurricane stories in the Navy -- riding one out in Pcola and one in Maine. The one in Maine was kind of fun - it wasn't bad as hurricanes go. I had to go out and tie down some lawn furniture during the storm. I had a young labrador retriever at the time, and we stayed out for about an hour ...the dog was just loving chasing dummies in the driving rain. DW and the neighbors thought I was crazy !

I think my dad survived a hurricane during a race at the Naval Academy, I vaguely remember it was a race to Bermuda/Nassau? Not all the ships finished, his did, but he said it was touch and go.

Some suspected tornado touchdowns in neighboring counties.
Downtown Annapolis has some flooding.
Saw a fat and vivid double rainbow driving back to house through a shower. I haven’t seen a double since Hawai’i tours, where daily was the norm.

Strange conditions here in Eastern PA. Very heavy rains throughout the day, and also very heavy winds. But not at the same time. When it rained, it came straight down. It got windy only when it wasn't raining. Flooding in the usual places. I pumped a few hundred gal of water out of my pool and enjoyed a beautiful starlit evening in the water with a mighty tasty margarita.

I'm a Florida boy...family's been there for...170 years. I've seen my share. And then in the AF...played football in the eye of a Cat 4 Typhoon at Kadena...okay, short game to be true, but it was fun to listen to the wind howl, and then die off, only to return with a vengeance.

But the most frightened...was when I was a teen and crewed a 51 foot Morgan ketch...and got caught on the open seas in the SE Bahamas during a force 9 gale. I've been through MUCH worse onshore but...that...when my uncle ran a line around me and secured me to the boat...I asked why? He said it'd protect me. Later when it was over he said it was to ensure they'd find us and be able to send us home for burial as he, a much more experienced mariner, wasn't sure we'd make it.

After that moment my respect for ALL mariners became something that I hold to this day. So when I hear of a hurricane, folks going through it, I don't laugh, I just smile slightly and say "thank you for protecting them."

Not sure why I felt I had to share that but...I did.

Very glad to hear everyone's okay!!!

Steve

We had about a dozen tornado warnings and several touch downs in the vicinity. Luckily we escaped relatively damage free. Many homes without power and some serious flooding. South Eastern PA

No power for the past 8 hours here in NJ. 🙄
I bet it’s another 24 hours where I live.
According to news reports, NJ had over 1.2 Million homes without power which is the most of any state. Pretty rocky in Morris County where we are with 2/3 of the homes affected but my house has power - we wavered and dimmed a couple of times but never dropped the load. We moved here 2 yrs ago from a much more rural area approx 20 miles away and they've been hit pretty hard. Part of the rationale for our move was the experience of at least three greater than 7 day power outtages so it appears that we chose wisely.

As a little kid, I lived through Dora as it smacked NE FL and coastal GA with massive rain and storm surge. I have mentioned I grew up on a coastal barrier island. The tidal creek and marsh at the back of the property overflowed and came within 4’ of our back door. Water moccasins swimming everywhere. Dead deer and wild boar carcasses. Other people’s lawn furniture floating into our back yard. No power, no water, no phone for days. No way off the island, causeway and bridges too damaged. Our house was brick, so we fared better. I will never forget the hours and hours of roaring winds, the sudden silence of the eye, and then worse winds. The evacuation order was given too late, and the only way inland was right into the storm. The devastation the next day was horrific. Half of an entire street was gone over on the beach side of the island, with a wooden house actually floating in the water. One whole section of the beach had lost all its sand when the surge receded. The big community pier was in a shambles.

Funny how some childhood memories really stick. I loved growing up there, still love to visit, but I don’t think I could live permanently in a place vulnerable every hurricane season. At least with hurricanes, you know where they are and where they might be going. Tornadoes really give me the willies, so unpredictable.

Best wishes for everyone to get back to normal soon, with “just COVID” to worry about.

Sandbags were deployed on various Bancroft doors Monday evening. For the 4/C regiment PEP and all training events were cancelled yesterday, so they got to sleep in an hour and had gray space the entire day (not sure if that’s worth it!) Heavy rain throughout the morning but by the afternoon mids were out exercising on Hospital Point getting some sunshine. (About 80% of the Brigade is present on the Yard). No significant damage to property according to the Dant. And it looks like the heat wave that was making everyone miserable for the past two and a half weeks (especially the Plebes) has finally retreated.

I wondered about all the stuff stored for the Mids. If there was any damage/flooding in that building. And glad my own has renters insurance!
