JERUSALEM — Israeli troops took up positions near the Gaza border Friday, and a senior government official said a ground war could be imminent, as Palestinian militants continued to lob rockets into Israel and one of them landed near Jerusalem for the first time since 1970.
The Israeli army called up 16,000 reservists, and cabinet ministers were asked to approve the mobilization of tens of thousands more, as the country made preparations for a possible ground offensive....
...Deputy Israeli Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said a ground invasion could come as soon as this weekend if the rocket fire does not stop.
“Israeli citizens, like any other people, deserve peace and quiet, so they can go about living their lives,” Ayalon told CNN’s Soledad O’Brien Friday morning. “If we will see in the next 24, 36 hours more rockets launched at us, I think that would be the trigger” for a ground operation.
