Its the big night!!! I was told not to watch, and to wait for the phone call after. But here's the link for anyone that wants to see what happens. Good luck to all the Cadets in the Class of 2019.

Thursday - March 7th at 7pm

I’ll be there, one of my favorite things to be invited to.

For the new kids here, what is this? Something I should show my high school CGA wannabe?
Yes! It's when the firsties receive their first assignments for after graduation. It's fun to watch. It could also give an applicant a good sense of where graduates can be assigned.

The electrical engineering capstone project presentations are on there, which maybe an interested student could watch. They do the final part of the capstone in May. I think the EE's are the only ones that have it on LIVESTREAM.

Awesome. I’ll be watching. Can you elaborate regarding grads’ first assignment - time length, process for assignment, and which destinations and assignments are the most desired?

Graduates first assignments are typically afloat. At last count 80% went to sea on a cutter, 15% went directly to flight school and 5% or so went to Sectors or Land Units (CG CYBERCOM etc).

First tours afloat are two years in length.

The process for the assignment is quite simple; the winter before you graduate you get a list of all the possible billets that will be available for your class. You rank them and submit them. What billet you get assigned depends on 1) your class rank and 2) needs of the service.

Most desired depends on the cadet. Typically Flight School and Sector goes high up in the class. Red Hulls and Black Hulls (Ice Breakers and AtoN units) go typically fairly high as well. Gives you incentive to study hard and do well during your four years at the factory!

So how would you USCGA grads rank these destinations?

Alameda, California

Boston, Massachusetts

Cape Canaveral, Florida*

Honolulu, Hawaii

Key West, Florida*

Kittery, Maine

Kodiak, Alaska

Little Creek, Virginia

Mayport, Florida*

Miami, Florida*

North Charleston, South Carolina

Pensacola, Florida*

Port Angeles, Washington

Portsmouth, Virginia

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Seattle, Washington

St Petersburg, Florida*

Warrenton, Oregon

Wilmington, North Carolina

I can't get the livestream to work. It says "off air" when I click on it. Is anyone else having this problem, and if so, how to fix it?

Those are all personal opinions; depends on the platform and what you look for in a location.

THAT BEING SAID

having lived in Seattle, and spent enough time TDY in a lot of these other places I'm going to have to say top of the list is Seattle and bottom would be Honolulu.

That being said your answers will be as varied as the number of people you ask.

Great night for the 1C cadets. I was surprised how many were sent straight to flight school. Good for them... I noticed a Government Major was sent to DC for a cyber security assignment. How cool is that?

I watched as well. Now I have to read up on what the job descriptions are. All the cadets appeared to be genuinely happy with their billets. Probably not all received their first choice but happy with their assignments, none the less.

Article from the New London Day https://www.theday.com/article/20190307/NWS09/190309530 stated that there were 243 billets and that 87% went to ships and 4 went to cyber. That leaves about 27 that went to either Sector billets or directly to flight school. Anyone know the breakdown of the sector / flight school numbers? Just curious. Also, the article said 44% got their 1st choice. Seems kind of low. USNA mentions how a higher % gets 1st pick. I wonder if mids are just more realistic in their selections whereas cadets truly put in "dream sheets."
