I've stopped telling others about my kid's plans...

I know it is frustrating, but keep trying. Those who want to understand will, and for those who don't, you will see their eyes glaze over. After graduation, when their kid moves back home and is working as a barista, they will ask again about your kid. Don't gloat when you tell them your kid works six months out of the year and earns six figures while travelling the world..

Love this! I have definitely seen the glaze! 💙💙 This is so cool to have a spot to feel understood.

We too, are nearinsh to Denver- northern Colorado, and everyone we know seems to beyond thrilled for our DD, who just received her appointment to West Point. Haven't yet heard negative yet! (Or free, for that matter).

Same here ... so I consider the source. These kids are different, the are special, they are driven and not everyone can understand what motivates them and that’s ok because what they are willing to do isn’t for everyone. I don’t think they are doing this for recognition or pats on the back and our family and friends don’t get it, it’s on them not on you!
My sister in law never misses a change to take a cheap shot at us for “letting him do this”. It’s plain to see she doesn’t get it so in a way I feel sorry for her she doesn’t understand the calling these kids are answering like the generations before them.

I'm sure some of you have encountered this....I find this so interesting - I can say that my daughter wants to go to MIT to design see-saws or to apply to Julliard to master her nose flute and all get the same reaction "ohh wow! Great for her! How exciting!" The moment I say "she focused into getting into a military academy" is like a wave of instant negativity. "Oh well, have a plan B because she won't get in" "They're so selective...why set her up for failure?" Or my personal favorite from earlier this week "oh...can you not afford to even send her to community college?" What? So now I just shrug my shoulders and say "do decisions yet" and keep quiet after that. My daughter loves it though - she loves being the underdog no one sees coming :)

Atleast these people know how tough it is. My DS wore his gear and had people asking "USNA, Where is that" or they think you're enlisted. Not that enlisting is bad either, but know something about what you are talking about.

Have you joined the West Point Parents 2024 FB page? My son got into WP this year as well, and we are in Thornton.
