January Appointments

If we have not heard anything at this point, is it safe to assume we will hear a "no" on the 15th?

There were quite a bit of people appointed on Jan 15th last year so I wouldn't say all hope is lost! I guess we'll find out in three days... Best of luck to everyone!

Does anyone know of early action candidates who received appointments in January? I still haven't heard anything from them and I'm worried that this may foreshadow a deferral letter next week on the 15th...
My daughter received her appointment right before Christmas. She is a recruited athlete so that might be the reason why she found out early.

My guess is that many will be deferred to the March timeframe. Many appointments will come in March. DS is a a C4C and was appointed from the National Pool in March as we know he did not receive the principal nom from our MOC. Hang in there.......

Honestly, I wish they didn't have this EA (Early Action) program. Or at the very least, better explain it to the applicants. 2 big misunderstandings that most applicants have are:

1) If you are notified in the beginning that you are "EA" eligible, that you have some sort of "Leg Up" or at least your application is "above average". The TRUTH IS: While I won't guarantee that "ALL" applicants are "EA" eligible, most are. I have more than 10 candidates and ALL WERE "EA". That is given out as soon as you basically apply and become a "Candidate". For most people, that's in the summer some time. Way before the academy has even looked at your application. Most of the bigger name colleges/universities have some form of "Early Admission" process. The academy is no different. Not to put anyone down or to discourage anyone, but the academy hasn't reviewed your application PRIOR to sending you the letter that says you're eligible for "EA". If you reach candidate status, and it's before 1 November, then you are eligible for "EA Consideration". In your portal it says pretty clearly: "You are eligible to participate in USAFA's Early Action Program. Please open the attached letter for details."

2) The second point is really disheartening. Many think that if they haven't heard that they've received an appointment by the "MID-January" time frame, that they probably won't receive an appointment. They start getting discouraged. They get stressed out. The truth is; the academy's "EA" program for lack of a better explanation, is very similar to MOST university's "EA" type program. It's designed for the "VERY HIGHLY COMPETITIVE" applicants who are going to have many options. You've heard me mention certain applicants who were part of the "NO BRAINER" Club. That's what the "EA" program was designed for. Basically, the applicant that is pretty much guaranteed to be accepted to ANY University in the country that they applied to. The ones who are going to have 4-5 schools offering them admittance and scholarships. The academy wants to get to these candidates before they say yes to another school (Or other academy) because the offer came prior to the normal March-April time frame. So what does this mean????? If you didn't receive an appointment by January "Under the EA program", then you are part of the "Majority" of applicants who will be waiting until March. It doesn't mean you have less of a chance. This is all it means.

Don't read into it. Not getting selected during "EA" is no different than not getting selected for "Early Admission" to most of the prestigious universities back in "October". Doesn't mean you WON'T get accepted. Just that for a number of possible reasons, they aren't offering you "Early Admission". Or in the case of the academy, an early appointment. Don't read anything more into it than that. Best of luck. Mike.....

And for those who forget to look into your portal and read the letters the academy sends, the first part of the "EA" letter that says sorry, is:

"Thank you for applying to the United States Air Force Academy and meeting the Early Action deadline. After a thorough review of your admissions file, we are deferring an appointment decision until our Regular Selections
period in March. While we have decided not to make you an early offer of appointment, your application will be reviewed again during Regular Selections along with our entire candidate pool. The fact that you completed your
file for Early Action will also be considered at that time and has been noted as a testament to your motivation to attend the Air Force Academy."

Thanks for your post, Christcorp. While it is difficult to hear, it is good to know what to expect. I am pretty much expecting to be deferred till March, knowing I am DEFINITELY not a "No Brainer" candidate. I will be pleasantly surprised if I get an appointment, but I figure that's a very long shot. This is a lesson in patience for sure!

I have one comp. nomination to USAFA, and no word yet. I checked the portal today and no change. I am also waiting for the regular mail.

Good luck to all.

ONE DAY LEFT! I'm freaking out here!!! Okay, not really, but I just want to get it over with! Even though I expect to be deferred, I can't help but hope a little! Good luck to everyone! Hoping to hear some good news from y'all tomorrow!

So does anyone know if a majority if the EA LOA/appointments are given on Jan. 15 or is it the day of deferral letters?

From what I've been reading, it appears that the majority of people eligible for EA will be deferred.......That said, I haven't seen that many appointments on the 2019 appointment thread so maybe they are going to just release everything tomorrow......I hope everyone gets good news tomorrow! I have been super stressed this week. In fact, I have woken up at 4 every morning just to check if the portal updated after synchronization!

Cayden, I am SO with you! Trying not to get my hopes up, but then I dreamed last night that I got accepted. I toss and turn for hours before I get to sleep and try to thing of ANYTHING else, but it's impossible. There will be NO sleep tonight, and tomorrow will be an early morning at my computer to FINALLY break USAFA's long silence!
Good luck again to everyone!

Good luck to all of you guys! I remember going through this process last year just like you guys. It REALLY SUCKED.
Don't be too crushed if you don't earn your appointment for the early action.
USAFA emailed me saying that I didn't make it for the early action.... and I was so upset that I couldn't focus on my school works.
But you have to wait and continuously improve your resume!
I received my appointment 20th of March, 2014. Not going to lie, best day of my life!
BTW, I am currently C4C at USAFA right now and i absolutely love this place!
Ask me anything for questions!

The EA system is almost rougher than USNA's rolling. With this you get your hopes up for a specific date, even though you may very well just hear a "we will tell you later"! Waiting anxiously for tomorrow...

What happens to the EA people, who have an LOA whose senators and reps STILL have not released the nominations?

Here are some clips from emails my DS had with his admissions counselor I thought I would share. He is anxious like the rest:

(discussing EA) -- "We have a rolling selections so you may hear anything from now to May. Unfortunately, some candidates will be deferred to regular selections that met early action deadlines. Regular selections are from Feb to May but we do have a rolling selections so they can make offers. I do not really know when they will make a decision."

(discussing the WPS) -- "All I can say is be patient because the whole process does take time and I understand it can be grueling. We are looking for a well-rounded individual. Someone who is academically, physically, and demonstrates character/leadership skills. ALO and teacher evaluations will also play a role. Your whole file will be read and a decision will be made if you are a good fit for USAFA. "

(discussing getting a LOA and not being on a slate) --"It is correct that sometimes the ones they pick decide not to come here, are disqualified, or for some reason did not meet our guidelines. In those cases we go back to the representatives to ask for a nomination on your behalf."

Bottom line: Nothing we all didn't already know but whatever the process is.... they aren't telling...:(

In the case of receiving a letter of declination, something I hope none of us gets, when should we expect to hear whether or not we have been accepted into the prep school (if it's even an option)? Would the prep school acceptance be in the letter of declination or in a separate letter later on? I'm not aiming for prep school, but just if this were the case!
