Hi,

I have been interested in the coast guard academy for some time now and was wondering about jobs after graduating. Are there any jobs for officers in the ‘action’? Ie. something similar to Aviation Survival Technician or Maritime Enforcement Specialist.

Thank You

The "jobs" you are asking about are enlisted only. If you want those jobs enlist, get a guaranteed "A" school and go for it. Generally as a graduate of USCGA you will get afloat Deck Watch Officer, Afloat engineering student engineer, aviation training, or a Sector Assignment. You can "be in the action" as a junior officer Boarding Officer once qualified, but the Rescue Swimmer and Law Enforcement Specialist are enlisted only ranks that can progress to Warrant and even Commissioned Officer LT with time and proficiency. Generally in the CG, Officers above O-2 supervise Law Enforcement Operations, are Aircraft Commanders (pilots), or otherwise Supervise Junior Officers in duty sections on board ships or at Sectors. If you want to "be in the action" hands on for your career, enlist and get your "rating" and enjoy your career and advance that way. Attending USCGA is probably not the way to go if you want to be a rescue swimmer or L/E Specialist for any substantial time. Junior Officers can experience some of the L/E stuff, but not rescue aircrew positions or Boarding Party positions on a regular basis. Check out the USCGA Web site for careers and then look at USCG.com and again check out career paths and see which one interests you.
