Jock Itch/Inverse psoriasis?

Would jock itch or inverse psoriasis be disqualifying? Would I be able to request antifungal medications (Like Lotrimin spray or powder) during plebe summer of my years at the academy? I got accepted and appointed, and I don't consider my jock itch/rash to be debilitating... just annoying. Would the USNA medical center be able to provide me some temporary treatment? Should I report it on I-day, Or should I keep it quiet and get the medications myself afterwords with liberty or freedom etc. I REALLY want to graduate from the academy, please provide your input for me!

Any help appreciated, thanks a lot and God Bless!

When you process through on I-Day, you’ll be required to surrender all medical and OTC treatments you’re carrying. Even something as simple as Tylenol or Advil. You’ll also be asked about any ongoing conditions you have that may need treatment. Be open, honest and forthcoming. They’ve seen and heard it all. You’ll be given what you need.

Every plebe gets an enormous “care package” that includes all the basic toiletries and not-so-basic items. Active or past mids can say better than I whether jock-itch treatment is included. But it’s safe to say that if you need something like that, you’ll get it. Again, they’ve seen and heard it all.

Don’t answer, but if this is a long-term, chronic issue, was this disclosed? If it is chronic, it could be something that a simple dermatologist appointment can permanently remedy. I’m a mom of 3 boys. Seen a lot. Sometimes things aren’t what they seem and actually need medical attention. And are no big deal.

Just throwing that out there. If you can avoid having it for plebe summer, that would be the best situation. That region gets a lot of moisture, sweat, chaffing in the hot HUMID summers that are Annapolis!

Midcavke nailed the process of course. You absolutely will be issued powder, body glide, etc. Another thing, is your parents won’t be able to send you any of these things, either. OTC meds are not allowed. USNA medical is where stuff will be managed that gets problematic beyond the norm. I will say, my boys never wanted to go there. Not sure if peer pressure, pride, lack of time or what.

You will not be able to go freely to the store to make purchases. There will be designated, earned times to go. But that doesn’t happen right away.

Congrats on the appointment!!!

Good advice from MidCakePa. If nothing has changed since Summer of 2015, just pack a care package with those "special" items and send to yourself from the Annapolis PO (West St.) downtown on I-Day. As long as it's OTC and a pretty benign product you shouldn't have an issue unless your Detailers are less than reasonable (which is a possibility). I am sure you know by now that some Companies have it pretty good compared to others during PS......... and the AC

Natural light does wonderful things. Mold and fungus doesn’t do well in well lit environments.

After you shower, air dry for a while in the privacy of your room. Use blow dryer down there to speed the drying process, and let the sunlight in your room do it’s job.

Not highly recommended, but you can get a Low-power UV lamp for short duration infrequent exposures. ... UV 311nm lamp specifically. You may need a prescription for the lamp ... Reptile lovers put UV lamps over their pets. Pet stores sell the bulbs. But be carefully. These are full spectrum UV bulbs, and you don’t want cancer.

Stick with 100% cotton underwear ... or just a jock strap under your pants.

In closing ... blow dry and air dry, and get more natural sunlight to the affected areas.

This worked well for my DS during 2019 Plebe Summer. Most Detailers are reasonable-but not all.

Everybody gets the itch .... same goes for the spaces between your toes too.

Nowadays, I walk around barefoot after drying between my toes for maybe an hour. You got to get Sunlight and Air on those feet. Then I put my socks on.

I don’t care how cold it is inside the house. I hate itch.

No, no they don’t. It’s not normal.

all kidding aside, history of psoriasis, and current fungal infection and any current or ongoing systemic fungal infection is a disqualifying condition. unless this is a serious issue where you have been diagnosed by a Dr. with some condition, you mention it at your peril. you could open a big can of worms if you self-diagnose.

"history of" means did you ever have it? even it you no longer have it, it's still a DQ.

these are sections where this is mentioned as disqualifying conditions:

q. History of psoriasis excluding non-recurrent childhood guttate psoriasis.
x. Current localized fungal infections, if they can be reasonably expected to interfere with properly wearing military equipment or performing military duties. For systemic fungal infections, refer to Paragraph 5.23.s.
s. Current active systemic fungus infections or ongoing treatment for systemic fungal infection. History of systemic fungal infection unless resolved or treated without sequelae.

the source doc is here: https://www.med.navy.mil/sites/nmotc/nami/arwg/Documents/WaiverGuide/DODI_6130.03_JUL12.pdf

EDIT - just realized you have already accepted an appointment so the question of whether or not to report to DoDMERB isn't the issue

And I thought I had seen everything on this Forum. Hard pass here....

As for OP ...I echo A6E, avoid self diagnosis.. If it is just jock itch, everyone has been there, done that. It will get worse during Plebe summer.
Use OTC treatments until you go to Plebe Summer; then suck it up during Plebe summer (or its bad enough that you need medical attention).

And if you do need to get something to put on it, go to sick call, that's what its there for. That's what your sailors will do (someday).
Believe me, the corpsmen at USNA have seen this and are stocked with what you need (at no charge).

Plebe Summer and Plebe year have sure changed a lot.

We barely had time to towel dry ourselves and sometimes not even that and surely not time to air dry after showers.
There's no way that we would have been allowed a non-reg lamp in our rooms either. I think that the regs allowed
one of a very specific genre of desk lamps in addition to those wonderful fluorescents in the overhead

Before AC in the 'Hall, we were never dry...unless we were freezing in one of the Academic Buildings in our whiteworks and sweat soaked cotton t-shirts. Ah...the memories. I'd do it all over again !

Some unsolicited advice here! Gentian violet has always worked well for me and babies.
When you use the rest room take paper towels and dry that area.
If you are in a rush for whatever reason and your towel is too wet, the leg part of a clean sock works to dry a skin fold or between your toes.

Well, well... there's a fungus among us. I will come in from the cold and add to the conversation.

One of my favorite infectious organisms is Trichophyton rubrum. This little stinker is the usual cause of Tinea cruris, or, jock itch.

OP stated, "Would I be able to request antifungal medications (Like Lotrimin spray or powder) during plebe summer of my years at the academy?"

Of course you can but why not kill the fungus before you get there.? Lots of great treatment advice is given above. Use a spray powder anti-fungal like Lotrimin as you mentioned. If the can says put it on twice a day do it three times. Don't just add new spray on top of old spray with yeasty beasties but wash the area and then apply. Wash with what one might ask? This stuff works good as a soak and I recommend for the groin it be used to wash the area and then hold to area for 15 minutes. https://domeboro.com/how-to-use/

Yes this will take time. I don't recommend reporting for PS with jock itch. I've seen it so bad the rash runs halfway down the thigh and is flaming red. When that gets hot and irritated by clothing the pain is terrible. If a bacterial infection develops then you have a problem that's very hard to control.

So, take some time and aggressively attack the infection. You'll be glad you did.

I now know more about Jock Itch than I really wanted to know.
