I have a year of AROTC experience under my belt but I have really decided that the air force is what I would rather do. Given the current situation (sequester, etc.) is it even an option to start as a AS 250(thats what I believe they are called.) Also, given the fact that SFT is after your sophomore year do people who start their sophomore year even have a chance at getting a spot. Any information regarding this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My son, is a senior. He transferred into his current school when he was a soph. and got in fine. He had to double up on his ROTC courses, and really work his butt off to get to know the other cadets and the leadership, but it worked out fine for him. A high GPA and SAT scores really helped him, that is a big part of what they look at, I believe.

That being said, 2 years ago was a very different climate than today so I am not sure if that all still holds true.

I'm currently a junior, participating as a 250 after two years of AROTC. It is very uncommon to go from AROTC to AFROTC but it has been done. I will say that being a 250 is hard work. You're learning a lot of stuff in both classes (it's a lot more in depth than what our MLSC classes were like at my ROTC BN) and you're expected be really locked on and well-studied during LLAB. That being said, if it matters to you and you are willing to work and fight for an EA, it can be your's. You just nee to be competitive.

so does that mean you will be going to SFT as a junior? Also while in AROTC i saw a couple people switch to army from air force but none really the other way around.

No, you would go to SFT as a rising jr., you would be put up for the EA selection board with the 200's this upcoming Feb.

As for why you see AFROTC switching to AROTC is because a few yrs back if not selected for SFT than some of those cadets decided to switch to AROTC.
