I'm currently a junior in high school and I'm beginning prep now for applying to the Air Force and Naval Academies. I have straight A's, leadership roles in my community, a ton of extra curriculars, and I'm starting now to physically prepare myself for the Academy or ROTC in a civilian college. However, I'm lacking in sports. I played basketball in Junior High, but stopped playing when I entered high school. I now have the opportunity to play basket ball this winter and run track in spring. I'll be on JV for basketball, and I probably won't play much, but it'll prepare me physically and mentally (with all the being screamed at constantly and such).
Do you all think it would look worse playing JV as a junior, but working my butt off to my full ability, or just not playing at all. I value opinions, so please be honest!

Does your school have an indoor/winter track program? Some kids do that to set them up for a more successful spring track season. The thing about track (at least where I am)is there is no designated Varsity and JV as such. You train together and hopefully you find your niche event and excel.

All that being said, do what makes you happy and good luck.

My school doesn't have indoor winter track. I'll be in well enough shape to do well in track by the spring, so I'm more concerned with the basketball issue.

Playing JV Basketball as a junior will look far better than not playing basketball at all. It's not about how good you are. It's that you're doing it, and participating as part of a team, learning team values.

Play JV if that is all you can play. The academies all value team sports and particularly letters in those sports. You can't make Varsity from your couch.

For sure play JV. This will increase your chances of making Varsity, if not giving you a spot (at my school all seniors make the team but a lot of them do not dress for games). Plus basketball is a winter sport so you will be able to say that you played a Varsity sport next year by the time you apply
