Hello. I am currently choosing classes for my junior year in high school and I was wondering if the CGA prefers AP chem to AP physics or vice versa. I also was presented the opportunity to take AP calculus ab but in taking this I will only have 3 years of math because a second year of calculus is not offered. I was wondering what science class would be most beneficial to my resume for the academy and if taking calculus will be a bad thing since I will only have 3 years of math.

Is the alternative to having three years of math having two? In that case, I would say you're definitely better off with three. It is also possible that you could take dual enrollment classes at a nearby community college for the fourth year of math. In terms of AP chem or physics, I would do what you enjoy more/feel like you will do better in. You will take at least one semester of each, and then another semester of one or the other while you're here (or another semester of each, if you're an engineering or MES major).

The alternative is having 4 years. If I take AP calculus as a junior I will have to take a summer college course. I believe ,now that you say it, I can take a dual-enrollment course for calculus bc senior year however these classes are ranked less that an AP course even though you take them at a local college.

huh... our HS dual enrollment (DE) ranks them the same as AP... hence my DD will do 2 DE next year (junior) in astronomy rather than APs she has absolutely nointerest in but do Honors to still be challenged.

DS reached out to admissions (USNA in our case) for guidance about a class option he was considering. That might be a good idea if you are still unsure?

I wouldn't worry about it being ranked lower. They are both college-level coursework, and I can't believe the Academy won't see that.

Whatever you choose to do, definitely take 4 years of math. AP chem or physics makes no difference - take the one you like the most.

I thought you had to have 4 years of Math and English to graduate. Maybe schools are different but at our HS you need 4 yrs.
They don't offer statistics or accounting any other form of math after calculus?

ours is the same except if you have reached Calculus before senior year you can be done with math

We only need 3 years of math to graduate. The dual enrollment class I would take after calc is weighted lower then an ap course in our class rank algorithm even though it is the hardest class you can take. They do offer lower maths for more practical uses but I feel this will lower my class rank.

that is a shame for your sake when the college course would be more beneficial personally but academically could hurt. tough choice to make

What about AP Computer Science vs. AP Physics or AP Chem? Our AP Physics teacher is not a good teacher so my DS has signed up for AP Comp Science. Should he also look into taking a physics or Chem class at the local college?

I was just suggesting AP Stats if the student has taken AP Calc AB and then doesn't want to take a Dual Enrollment Math in order to have a weighted class.
