Hi, I was just awarded a NROTC scholarship and first just want to thank everyone on the forums for answering all my questions so far. I just wanted to ask should I wait to accept it? My mom isn’t pro-military and is telling me not to accept it yet. This is my dream and number 1 pick. What happens if I don’t get into my number 1 school? Can I change my unit after I accept the scholarship? Should I wait till I hear back from schools to accept it?

Reading through the whole email I see it answered most my questions, but are there any cons to accepted the scholarship right now?

There is no downside to accepting the scholarship now. It is non-binding so if you decide not to use it there is no problem. In fact you can use it for a year and drop out before sophomore year classes start with no obligation whatsoever. You can normally transfer it to another institution if you are not accepted at your #1.

Edit: Oh yeah, CONGRATULATIONS!

Yep; no downside to accepting now. As stated above it is not binding and you can drop anytime up until you step on campus as a sophomore with not repayment or service obligation. And, yes, you can change your unit if you don't get into your #1 school. I've seen lots of people say it was super easy to make the change. I can't remember seeing anyone say they couldn't make the change because the unit they want to switch to was full. In fact, a thread a month or two ago said the Navy has removed the cap on the number of scholarship mids in a unit. As for your mom, give her time. She's probably worried about your safety. My DW was the same. She still worries (she's a mom), but now she couldn't be more proud of him and is embracing his choice as he follows the path he has set for himself.

I would accept it immediately. It is not binding until the first day of your sophomore year. Furthermore, once you receive the scholarship, the five schools you listed no longer matter, so you can request a change to any school with an NROTC unit. I would strongly recommend accepting (I did), and reach out to NETC via email, they respond super fast and have incredible information. Congratulations!

It is not binding until the first day of your sophomore year.

For clarity, obligation date is 01 September of your sophomore year, not the first day of sophomore year.

Thank you for correcting me Dores, I had assumed that schools would usually start on that date since high schools in my area do, but it is certainly different between different colleges.

Congratulations!

Another thing to consider is that, if you accept right away, you could bring that info to the schools that you are still waiting to hear from. All colleges are different, but at some of them having an NROTC scholarship can help tip the scales with admissions.
