I was medically qualified in July, I had my BGO interview in late July, and submitted my application in mid august. However, throughout all that time I had no intention of applying for NROTC. I have just recently realized my mistake and have begun my application for the program. I know I should notify my BGO but do I also need to tell my regional admissions officer? Also, do you think it will look bad that I've made this decision so late?

The question you don't answer is whether you still intend to apply to USNA as well as NROTC or whether you've now decided you only want NROTC? If you have decided NOT to apply to USNA, do let your BGO and USNA know. That way, they won't keep pestering you about the status of your application. If you plan to apply to both (NROTC and USNA) you don't have to notify your BGO as we're not really involved in the NROTC process. We are supposed to indicate to USNA if a candidate is applying for NROTC but that's about it -- notifying your BGO lets him/her update that stat.

I don't think anyone will be surprised/unhappy you are deciding this late to apply. If you think the NROTC program is a better fit for you, that's what you should do. You will still end up serving your country . . . just taking a different path to get there.

Sorry I wasn't clear-- I am definitely still applying to USNA and will no doubt go if I get in. It's just with getting together all my civilian school apps I've realized that the Navy is what I want to do and that I should apply ROTC.

My son is applying to AFROTC as well and just started looking at his application this week. He's taking the PT test they require tomorrow and hopes to get it all complete this weekend. Seems like most of the people he knows through Summer Seminars and these boards are at about the same place. They've just had SO much to do with the academy applications themselves, and then the nomination applications, that this is the first they've gotten to it. Everything on the ROTC stuff (AF at least) says the deadline is January 9th, so I don't think you're that far behind the power curve!
