We met as LTs in Korea. I’d like to say it was the flight suit, but there were literally hundreds of guys in flight suits and a handful of good looking girls. (Don’t hate me for calling them girls. I’m a pterodactyl).
Every time I saw her she was surrounded by good looking guys. I could never get the courage to push in. She would occasionally catch my eye, but I figured I didn’t stand a chance.
One night while walking out of the O-Club she came running up behind me and said “Hey, you.” Then asked what I was doing that night. We went hiking that weekend, then were inseparable for the rest of our tours. I extended six months so we could go back to “the world” at the same time.
I kept going back and forth on marriage. I wasn’t sure I was ready. She was then sent to Saudi Arabia as an augmentee for a reserve or National Guard unit for Desert Storm. She was able to make a quick call on a pay phone when she got there and told me she was assigned to a water purification unit out of Pennsylvania.
The next day it was in the news that the 14th QM Detachment, a water purification unit from PA was hit by a skud and there were multiple casualties. I was sick to my stomach. I knew there was probably only one such unit from PA and she was suppose to be there.
The next few days were gut wrenching. I kept in touch with her mom- she would be notified first. I swore to myself if she was alive I would stop being a jerk an marry her.
Days went by, but no notification. I feared the worst- there might not have been much to ID.
Then, a few days after the war ended she called. My first question was how are you alive? She told me she was enroute to the 14th QM when the air raid sirens went off. She immediately took shelter. There were some explosions nearby, then the all clear. She went on her way, but then discovered that the place she was told to go was a shambles. She was told by someone to go back to where she came from as the unit was probably no longer combat effective. She did so and ended up being assigned to s reserve MP unit as a brigade S-4 (logistics officer).
She got home a few weeks later. We eloped a couple weeks after that. I told her I wasn’t waiting for the “real wedding”.
