Not bad for a Martial Artist, we are proud and happy, one more milestone.

The RC sent you an email? An LOA because of his CFA scores or overall?

No, we received the email last Tuesday and it was not an LOA. Subject line reads

"You are highly competitive and may be in consideration for an LOA!"

Good morning!

If you are receiving this email, then I have reviewed your initial file and determined you to possibly be competitive for a letter of assurance (LOA) in the fall. Before I speak further on the steps necessary to be considered, let me explain what an LOA is. It is, essentially, an agreement from the academy to a candidate that they have a spot reserved and need only to focus on completing the application with no risks (risks can be defined as behavioral issues, failing courses, etc...), passing the candidate fitness assessment, receiving a nomination, and passing medical. This means that this candidate would no longer have to compete with other candidates for a spot at the academy as long as they complete their application and are in good standing.

In order to be evaluated for an LOA, we must have your official 6th semester transcripts as well as official SAT/ACT scores on file. Some of you may have some of these already in, others still only have their self-reported scores. The definition of official can be a bit ambiguous so allow me to clarify:

SAT/ACT scores are easy. Simply put, they must come from the testing agency to us. Please make sure there is an essay or writing score on at least one of these tests.

Transcripts can be considered official if they are sent in the following ways:

1. Schooled sealed envelope mailed from the high school to us.
2. Copy that has been signed by the guidance counselor (if signed then it can be faxed, emailed, or mailed from any source)
3. An emailed copy direct from the guidance counselor to us.

The sooner you do this the better. Just to clarify, you are not guaranteed to be awarded an LOA but your file is VERY COMPETITIVE for consideration. If awarded, you would receive notification in the fall.

I have never heard of this before. Was it from admissions? Or what does RC refer to?

All correspondence we received over this last year-ish (from NASS, to Candidate, to LOA, to appointment) has been about 98pct from his assigned admissions counselor. No RC. And we were never informed of his CFA scores. In fact, I asked him after NASS, and he couldn’t remember, other than maxing out all he could and being in the top of the rest...he didn’t really care about the actual numbers as he did well.

A couple things stand out: paraphrasing ‘one needs only to complete the following xxxx, you are no longer competing against the rest’. Note that all that’s listed as things that ‘only need to be completed’, are ALL the things that anyone needs to complete. Another odd thing is that academics and standardized tests haven’t been reviewed. That’s also odd as that’s a BIG part of receiving either an LOA or appointment. And the last odd thing to me, is that LOA’s are rare. As in don’t count on one. Or be disheartened when you don’t receive one. In that sense, it seems so odd to promote that you may be a candidate for an LOA. Something doesn’t seem right to put such emphasis on this with only CFA scores, and from our experience, doesn’t make sense that USNA would be putting their name behind such a statement so early with so little I for about a candidate. It’s also strange that the email seems to be reading towards more than one recipient. As in a group of people.

Perhaps I’m reading it all wrong. I am not trying in any way to discredit, but am wanting to emphasize to not rest on laurels from this email. There is a long, challenging journey ahead. Despite receiving this, do not feel overly confident. Keep improving and presenting your best self. In May of next year, there will be many, many super qualified, exceptional young adults that many will be scratching their heads that they ultimately received the TWE.

Another very important point, is to readers of this thread who did NOT receive this email. Most do not. Don’t be discouraged. At all. Keep working hard on your own package. Period.

Very curious about this email.

I was thinking the same thing. Weird to to send an email like that without seeing gpa/rank/test scores first. Unless they are basing off self reported stats from SS application. Either was it seems a bit odd. Usually they want a good portion completed with verifiable numbers before considering an LOA.

IMHO your email is:diespam:I would be careful with this email. IMHO if it is not from admissions it means nothing.
Only USNA Admissions can offer an LOA. In reviewing the email I would doubt USNA Admissions would capitalize HIGHLY COMPETITIVE.

Very curious about this email.

The email was not from USNA, was from USMA and it is totally unrelated to CFA scores.
USMA does not have his CFA scores from NASS and the email was received last Tuesday, NASS started 4 days later, but we are happy with his numbers because even knowing that they are average, we know he passed.
USMA has his ACT/SAT Scores, 5th-semester transcripts, extracurriculars and rank in class.
He emailed his RC and in fact, the email was sent by him.
We are aware of the long challenging journey ahead. We started this journey January 15 and we know that it will be a long time before it ends.
The parents, the moderators and the members of this forum have been extremely helpful, so I thought I shared our moment of HOPE

Aha. The missing puzzle piece was the correspondence originating from USMA, not USNA. That messaging doesn’t fit with USNA SOP.

Those cfa scores while probably passable are not notable. You're rightfully proud of your son, but I'd caution about becoming too involved. Did he get the email, or you?

The academies like independent, self sufficient kids. And, I believe that all applicants are in the beginning are under consideration for an LOA.

Ahhhh I understand! It’s posted in the USNA forum. Did not understand it wasn’t USNA. And as I stated, didn’t make USNA sense.

I am aware USMA utilizes RC’s. So now it makes sense. It is important to make this clarification, so others applying (and not receiving this email -USNA) do not get needlessly discouraged. I’m sure you can understand that. There was no intent to discredit or quash hope. I have absolutely NO experience with USMA (although I do know they use RC’s. Very different than USNA-which is the forum we are on here), only USNA/USAFA.

Good for your DS. It’s truly an amazing adventure. Best wishes!

There are quite a few usage and grammatical errors in that EMail as well. If you cut and pasted verbatim, the one that really gives me pause is
"1. Schooled sealed envelope mailed from the high school to us."

Was there a link in that EMail or a read receipt requested?

It sounds completely antithetical to how Service Academies communicate to applicants, but it is only my opinion.
