Ok. So I was thinking that if I am not offered an appointment to USNA, what I should do as a back up plan. I know I want to go to the Naval Academy and I'd do anything to get there. I am applying for an NROTC scholarship, but I have looked at Virginia Military Institute and Norwich Military Academy as well. If I got to VMI or NWA, is it easier to reapply to USNA, given that I get very good grades and show that this something that I really want?

You apply for an NROTC scholarship at either VMI, NWA, and don't forget the Citadel, and any college with an NROTC program. NROTC is a good backup, but also be aware of the type 1, 2, 3 scholarships. Type 1 is like a full ride, while a type 2 and 3 requires you to pay for the rest of what is not covered by the scholarship.

If you don't get in on first try and are picking somewhere else to go, think also about going there for four years (you might not get in on second or third try either).

My son had no backup plan! He wanted to go to USNA and that was it. I'm not sure I'd recommend that. He did get offered a foundation scholarship, took it, and went to prep school for a year before he got in. There are other options to consider besides ROTC.
