I understand they need to know my character through interviews and recommendations... but am i a competitive candidate with a 3.88 unweighted gpa, good amount of AP classes (5-8), class president of about 500, 3 sport varsity athlete, 1330 sat score, volunteer at church/ part of a small group at church. From this bit, am i competitive?? Also, is my SAT score low? Thank you!!

Hi, I am a junior in high school and I am going to be applying to USAFA this year. I saw this and my initial thought was to compare this information to my own. Everything seems great in my perspective, but I am also not a part of admissions for USAFA. If you are worried about your SAT score, it doesn’t hurt to retake it because the academy super scores. Always try to be your best and if you have the opportunity to take it again then I would do so. I know that’s it’s frustrating to take another standardized test (I have been there myself to get my own score) but in the end, if you get the score, you need you will feel relieved! Best of luck with your journey!

Those numbers seem competitive to me, but in a competitive district, they might not be the best on a slate.

CFA? Leadership?

I am still planning on bringing my SAT score up. I have been practicing and hoping to get it more of a 1370-1400 range because I’ve only taken it twice. I have not taken the CFA yet, but plan to soon. Also, with leadership I am class president and captain of 2 sports teams. Thanks for the help!!

I myself have a LOA and a nomination and believe you are competitive. But at the end of the day, I am not fully qualified to judge competitiveness as I am a candidate myself.

The academies are looking for well-rounded people dedicated to leading and serving others. Strive for greatness in every area of your life (don’t burn yourself out though), show your passion in interviews/essays, and you should be fine.

Good luck! Message me if you have any questions.

Competitiveness totally depends on the district. I served on my MOC's interview panel a few weeks ago and we were divided into two and three member panels to get through the candidates. My panel saw approx 8 candidates for the different academies and I think that a 1330 would only be ahead of one of the interviewees that I saw. If the sample that I had was indicative of the larger group then the 1330 would be in the bottom 10-15 percent. Just about all of the candidates had multiple sports, APs, etc as well. The one candidate that I saw with a lower (1300) score was All-County in his sport as well as team captain of a large team while also caring for his disabled father. His mom was in another state helping out grandma leaving him to get his dad dressed and situated for the day and then coming home after school/practice/scouts to make dinner and do whatever else was needed and THEN doing homework. Certainly a special circumstance that was probably preventing him from working to improve on his SATs.

From what you've shown, yes, you are competitive. But, we don't know about your leadership or CFA scores. 1330 is a good SAT score, but it can be improved. I'd suggest taking it again, and trying to get those numbers up. And, like others have said, the competitiveness of your district is a big factor in SAT scores. I've got a 1510 on the SAT and it's not even the highest score among candidates from my school. So, it's better to be safe than sorry. Take the test again if you can, and try to get those scores up.

I am not part of admissions, so don't think I am the expert here or anything. This is just what I think from what I've learned through the process.
