JV compared to Varsity

I know this question is probably asked a lot, but I couldn’t seem to find a thread related to it, so I thought it would never hurt to ask. Currently, I’m a sophomore in High School, and I am kind of concerned about sports. I know that the academies look fondly upon varsity sports/team captains, but I struggle to reach varsity at my school. I am still involved in sports(track and mountain biking) but am not always varsity due to the competitive region. I still consider myself fit, and am training to preform well on the CFA. I feel as if I have a strong resume at this point(36/710), good test scores, 4.0 unweighted, 4.33 weighted, community service, sga, civil air patrol, top ensemble in band, state for band) and such but I am worried that this will be overlooked if I am not in a varsity sport. I am always working to get to varsity level, but I may not So, essentially my question is: will the rest of my resume be hindered/overlooked if I am only on a JV sports team, but have good CFA scores?

Thanks All!

A quick google search pulled up the USAFA class of 2019 profile. 81% of that class played sports at a varsity level in HS. I always think of that number as skewed, because that includes recruited athletes, who obviously played at a varsity level in HS. That means a pretty large % of non-recruited USAFA Cadets did not compete at a varsity level in HS. The bottom line is, control what you can control. Do the best you can, and submit the best application you can.

An important thing about playing a sport (beyond the fitness), is the team aspect. Sacrificing yourself for the betterment of the team. Team First. And then motivating those team members as a leader (Captain). The good news, is absent your rise to a Captaincy position, you are still making contributions as a team member. The other part is being a leader...if you are not going to be able to do that as a Captain (presumably because you won’t be varsity), you can still have leadership elsewhere in you life. Either on your JV team, or other areas. It will be important to show that leadership in your essays, interviews, and from your LOR’s written on your behalf. You won’t be overlooked simply because you weren’t a varsity sports member. But you will have to show your leadership in your package.

Find ways to make an impact in ways you can. Find ways to lead and motivate others. That’s what will matter beyond your level of sport participation.

Good for you for looking at this as a Sophomore! You still have time to work on your “package”.

Thank you all! I feel like I am building a leadership package outside of sports, I am a flight sergeant and public affairs officer in Civil Air Patrol, I am in the band leadership program, applying for SGA Officer, and my schools ambassador/leadership program. Thank you so much for the help!
