I run cross country and track at an extremely competitive school with a girls xc team that’s been to state in D1 twice in a row these past two years and it’s highly unlikely that I’ll make varsity on xc or track the rest of my high school career. However attending college pursuing a club running team or trying a new sport is something I’m very open to and wanting to do. How much will not being able to make varsity affect me especially if it shows I’ve been on JV for 4 years?

My memory is that the application form you fill out has a box/pull down menu to check for the varsity or club sport (gymnastics/travel soccer, etc.) you participated, then a box to check if you were a letterman/award winner, and then a box to check if you were a team captain.

You can get credit if you earned a blackbelt in Karate or Tae Kwon Do, but you have to scan in and email a copy of your black belt certificate

I'm not sure you get credit for JV sports unless there is a remarks section where you can add your additional activities.

Not being on a varsity team may or may not affect your application (I am a sophomore and know many people who got in without playing any varsity sports in high school); however, you can combat this with outstanding CFA scores and other physical/sporty extracurriculars or accomplishments (like maybe consistently running in marathons) that you can add to your application. I believe that a lot of times USAFA looks at the importance of playing varsity sports for two reasons:
1) obviously, a high level of competition/athleticism, etc.
2) leadership opportunities available in playing on varsity (i.e. captain).
Because of this, if varsity/being a captain are not possible, look to accentuate your leadership qualities in other areas or clubs/organizations in your school or community.

If you do get into USAFA, a lot of intercollegiate sports hold tryouts at the beginning of the year for cadets to walk-on to their teams (just talk to other IC cadets or even the coaches about your interest). In addition, USAFA has a few different club teams that involve lots of running and are open to all cadets to tryout/join. Good luck!
