Ketchup on Hot Dogs

I recommend Heinz 57 sauce.

Isn’t this a British thing — Heinz 57 on “chips”?

Which leads me to this: Whenever I go to a fish-and-chips place, I see folks sprinkling malt vinegar on the fish and putting ketchup on the chips. That’s all fine and well, I suppose, but the vinegar is actually meant for the chips. Oh, bollocks!
Heinz House of Parliament Sauce (HP) on chips.

I believe HP sauce is closer to our A-1 sauce.

I am the only person I've ever known who uses Heinz 57 on fries, but I never ever use it on a steak.

I know shepherd's pie, but what the he!! is "cold meat salad?"

, I would recommend that you lurk quietly in and out of Memphis BBQ joints without asking for ketchup based BBQ sauce (said the native Tennessean).

I'm confused here....I'm pretty sure Memphis BBQ is tomato based.....as opposed to Eastern Carolina BBQ which is all cider vinegar.

With the invasion of Tennessee by Mid westerners, Texans and Northerners, tomato based BBQ "sauce" is available everywhere. It's the sauce not the BBQ, which is only the meat. I'm not against it. I just didn't know it growing up in Nashville.

I did have pulled pork in Alabama that was served with some kind of mayonnaise sauce.

Grew up in England and never saw anyone put HP sauce on chips. Now HP sauce on a bacon sandwich... best breakfast ever! But then again English bacon is a completely different thing than the fatty stuff here in the US!

"stick meat"

I spit up my coffee a little. From now on, I will refer to hot dogs as "stick meat". It is genius. "Here is what is wrong, there are too few stick meats in this world. You have your frankfurter stick meats and you have your..."
Stick Meat: Walking around in a foreign port during the day with cats everywhere. Later at night the cats are gone and vendors are cooking up some meat on a stick. In some places it is called monkey on a stick. Certainly it isn't really monkey, is it? What with all the cats having disappeared.

We’re sailors. We eat that stuff up. Literally. My rule of thumb was, “I’ll try anything once, but do not tell me what it is before I eat it.”

We need to go back to hot dogs, because some memories just popped up about some things I ate per rule above and the gleeful faces of people as they told me what it was.

View attachment 2334 Here it is.

So it really wasn't just a faulty memory.
No, it's real. A couple years ago my son and I met up in B'ham and went to the Bama/10erSee game. While waiting in the airport to fly home, I picked up a shot glass for my daughter's collection and a bottle of Alabama White Sauce for my wife. She was not impressed.

That sparks memories of a port visit to Athens - our only liberty port during a 6 month Beirut float. A few of us took a trip well out of the city into non-english speakingville and were having a "Mixed Grill". Sadly, another diner who did speak our language filled us in AFTER we'd eaten most of our meal.

Ugh...oldest DS studied abroad in Beijing and he LOVED to eat cheap off of the street vendors....."shudder."

I ate dog once. Same sort of thing. Found out after ingestion. It was pretty good.
