This thread is disappointing to me, not because of the reports of food shortages but rather that it reinforces my observation last year that Wardrooom style meals are no longer a part of the program. USNA is sounding more and more like a college every day. (Rant over....as someone noted on the Class Facebook page, we have become the DOG's (disgruntled old grads) that we laughed about when they tried to sneak into Bancroft during Homecoming weekends).
It sounds to me like this is as much a leadership/asset management issue than a budget issue. As '85 notes, the menus are repetitive, and it should be able to be able to predict with some accuracy how many Midshipman will attend each meal.. some meals have always been more popular than others (Z-burgers and Mexican Meal > Neeb's loaf (don't ask !). That said, if waste is the problem, I'm sure someone could write the app that allows Midshipman to select which meals they will attend in the next week.
>Their mini refrigerators ???? Please don't tell me that Midshipmen can have a refrigerator in their room ?
The bacon thread appears to be metastasizing-------worrying
Seems like some parents don't see a problem, but some do. I also heard that the healthier options were taken away from the tables and offered at a single location. My mid mentioned that midshipmen will choose not to get a healthier option just because they don't want to lose time getting it. The food is available, but the amount offered at the tables is not enough. Many, including my son, are choosing to eat only what's on the table so they end up eating less healthy and less food in general. There must be a simple solution to these issues, and the Academy should look for a way to fix it. I will be writing a letter of concern to the Academy. The Academy cares what parents are thinking, so the more parents that raise the question, the better. If you think it needs a change, please do the same.
I don't know if its $5 but back when I was a mid, USNA got MORE money per day in ration allowance to feed mids than the rest of the Navy. Allegedly, that was because of the higher caloric needs of the active mids compared to the average Navy person. Over the years that additional credit went away but I think that the other academies still get the supplemental $'s.I don’t believe the other Academies budget $5 more per Cadet per day as was earlier claimed
I’ve been seeing this go around on various parent sites so I asked my Mid about it. She is an athlete and has a pretty healthy appetite. Her reply is below.
“there is plenty to eat and everyone gets enough. They got rid of about 4 items that were unhealthy anyway. There used to be a lot of waste and leftovers on the table and now there’s not. Other than that I don’t really notice a difference in the food at all. I eat a salad every day with my meal and the lines are not long so no problem there.”
In her opinion people are over reacting, a common occurrence there.
I have trouble imagining a USNA life without "Big N" Steak Sandwiches! Same with Ham Francisco.some meals have always been more popular than others (Z-burgers and Mexican Meal > Neeb's loaf (don't ask !).
Not doubting her case, but athletes eat separately from the rest of the Brigade (typically after), and have fewer mids per table on average than companies do for the same amount of food. At Brigade noon meal, the salad line wraps all around the wing.

My mid says the salad is better at noon meal so brings a gallon size ziplock in her sock and makes a salad to put in the wardroom fridge for dinner. A little creativity goes a long way.
.At the CVW I went to, my Plebe took us to the Mid Store and got us each a protein bar for breakfast. We had lunch in King Hall. We ordered delivery for dinner both nights (Chinese the first and papa johns the second)
