Knee Problems + Knee Brace at Beast

I recently have started to experience problems in my right knee that haven't shown any sign of improvement. I am a Senior who was appointed to the class of 2024 and I was wondering if cadets are allowed to bring a knee brace to Beast.

I have never had a major knee injury before, so I am hopeful that the issue will resolve before Beast, but just in case it's not I want to be prepared for anything.

P.S. If anyone has had knee problems in the past and would like to PM me, I would be very grateful

Don't know if WP allows any type of medical devices to be brought with you. This is question maybe best asked of your RC (be general in the question), but be careful as 2023 lost I think 10 or so NCC's on R-Day for different reasons. You may wish to contact MR. Mullen on the DoDMERB thread regarding the need to report a change in health status, he is non-judgmental and VERY helpful.

What were some of the reasons for the NCC’s being sent home? Just medical DQ’s?

I think they send some home for not being in physical shape as well. My daughter got a letter stating she should be prepared to equal or better her cfa. With a reminder of how many pull-ups she did on the cfa.

Your health is important. No one can diagnose here. I sure would recommend getting it checked out. Ignoring the signs your body is sending you could do permanent damage. If it’s nothing? Then it’s nothing. But if it’s something, you need to know.

A SA summer is brutal on the body. You certainly want to be in your best shape. Not already injured. I understand the temptation to ignore, but that could have very detrimental outcomes.

USMAcadet123 - Thje technical answer is: You should contact me at Lawrence.e.mullen.civ@mail.mil; provide complete name and last 4; paste your posting above to the email. Why? You've had a change in your medical status that "could" have a profound impact on your ability to successfully complete Beast. Failure to disclose that, while arriving at a West Point that has a very distinct honor code is not endorsed by anyone . :wiggle:

Sorry. The above was meant for USMACandidate123 :wiggle:

Ok great, thank you.

I’m getting it checked out by a doctor tomorrow, so I will contact you after they make a diagnosis

Ok and in that case, you would be best served to scan in a copy of the record of the visit as a .pdf attachment and send that to me too.

I’m not an expert here, so take this advice with more than a grain of salt. I defer to Mr. Mullen entirely.

I’m not sure about bringing a knee brace, but in case you mean something more along the lines of say, a patellar tendon strap, make sure you make that distinction.

Even if your injury isn’t very serious, consult with an orthopedic specialist to see if an MRI would give the quickest diagnosis. Sometimes you may have something that is easily correctable (such as inflammation of the infrapatellar fat pad) but is difficult to discern from other injuries.

Above all else, play it safe. While you can push through some injuries, those requiring a brace (due to joint instability) tend to worsen with repetitive aggravation. Don’t spend the next 5+ years of your life trying to correct a preventable situation.

I’m sorry for your situation and hope this is only something minor.

I am not associated with WP, but were present at the Supe's briefing on R-Day and he told us that a few (of the 1100 original) did not even get to take the oath, but were sent home on R-Day. There were quite a few others that "out processed" during Phase I of BEAST (the admin, physical, and medical part before Buckner). Sorry, I can't speak to the different reasons, but I can tell you not being able to perform the PFT on day one is not a good thing.

Do you mean the APFT?

I only know that NCC's are required to complete some type of physical test and failure may result in their being sent home. In the Supe's brief, the first group did not even take the oath, their escorts were contacted and they were released into their custody and disenrolled and allowed to leave immediately. This is something that needs to be discussed with admissions to get the right information. I can only relate the brief and secondhand info regarding problems thru BEAST. Any current Cadet is much better equipped to answer your questions.
