KP Khakis vs USNA Khakis - same or different?

Due to some sort of SNAFU, my daughter has only one set of khakis and is facing a challenge of trying to get them laundered. I live relatively close to Annapolis and considering purchasing a set there, tailor them, and shipping them out. Can anyone provide insight as to whether the USNA uniform can be substituted.

thanks

If your daughter is not where she can solve this herself, and a current/recent USMMA midshipman doesn’t pop up in the interim, you could call the USMMA Navy Exchange store to confirm. This is the same NEX system that carries USN, NROTC, USNA khaki uniforms.

Do you have a DOD ID card that allows you to shop at a Navy Exchange, such as the uniform shop inside the NEX at the Naval Support Activity Annapolis, which is across the Severn River from the USNA Yard? There a a small uniform shop inside Bancroft Hall for those mids and staff.

Something for the future. Assuming your daughter has some kind of Navy Reserve ID (just realized I have forgotten what kind of ID they get), she might be in the DEERS system, the DOD database. If she’s in there, she can order Navy uniforms, free shipping, from the online NEX uniform store, by logging in and setting up a profile. She can take them to any military uniform store with tags still on to be tailored.

If you’re the designated helper Stateside, I would call the KP NEX folks first to consult.

Not to muddy the waters, but there are khakis that are commonly called “wash khakis,” all cotton, which are worn shipboard. This isn’t the case for Navy ships anymore, but may still be in use on merchant vessels. The Navy summer khaki uniform is 100% synthetic. This is where you need KP-specific advice.

Managing uniforms is a bit of a life skill. Having dupes and back-ups becomes the norm.

Best I can do from my limited knowledge.

My DD has had several uniform issues while at KP, all of which she resolved without assistance from the outside. I understand your desire to help, but this is a situation where I would let your DD resolve it on campus for herself.

I went through some of this at KP. My suggestion is:

1. Order kahkis online from the Navy Exchange uniform store. Your daughter will have access.

2. Take them to the tailor shop at KP. They do stuff like this all the time, and you'll get a better result this way.

You can purchase khakis, SDB and whites from NEX online, at their uniform shop. I really dont understand all of the let the mid do it themselves talk again, as I don't see any issue with ordering uniforms if they need it. Its not like when you walk through the KP gate that you give up all assistance from others. You will need the DOD ID info in order to access the uniform shop. We have done it many times, since the KP uniform supply is less than average on ability at times. Never had an issue with the uniforms not being "KP" issued. The general tailoring can be done anywhere, but the insignia tailoring should be done at KP. on the SDB's there are still some Brooks Brothers out there, (depends on the state of government contracts i guess) and if you have/get them, you can take them to a BB store (if and when they reopen) to have their tailor do that piece for you.

thanks for the reply. That’s what I was looking for.

Yes, I understand that is something she should do herself. Perhaps I should have mentioned in my original request that she try to remedy this herself and she was unsuccessful. that may have avoided the extra commentary. They’re required to be in full uniform until taps. Then they’re not allowed to leave the building so there is no opportunity to wash the uniform.

Update:

just called NEX and ordered uniform to be shipped directly to the school. She will get it and take it to the tailor for fit and insignia.

I called the school and spoke directly with the uniform honcho. He provided me her sizes. He also said that the uniform shipment is over a month delayed. She will get her uniform by end of week.

Some may argue I’m doing too much. She doesn’t have a military ID yet so she can’t acces the website. If it weren’t for COVID, the plebes wouldn’t have this issue in the first place. I didn’t mind helping out in this instance. Flame away...

My son is at KP -class of 2024 and he probably could use a new uniform also. Could I DM you here to get more info and how to order? Thanks!

The lucky locker, and all of the uniforms graduates such as myself discarded or left in baggage lockers. Sooo many mids and ex-mids there you can find whatever you need if you look for it.
