Language Pick

Good luck on those language studies.

In my day our Bn had ARVN scouts assigned to our teams maybe 60% of the time. We did not have enough scouts for 100%.

Not one of those scouts in our Bn spoke English. Not one of the Marines or Docs , when I was there, spoke Vietnamese.
Wow, a reflection of the times changing. This soldier can speak both.

I chose to take Russian plebe year..... don't if you want to minor. It makes you have a gap year in language or an overloaded semester. But, if you are interested in Russian, let me know. This is the first language that I ever learned, so it has been a challenge.

Considering the world power alignment and immediate use potential for Russian or Mandarin, those would be my top suggestions. In terms of post-military life, Mandarin will be key in almost any global business pursuit. I use my Mandarin language minor skills during weekly calls with factories in China. During BCT, I was told the combination of English + Mandarin allows you to speak to more than 95% of the world's population. Today, most of the world population is centered in China and India. The majority of business professionals in India already speak English, so you are presumably already covered there....

Our DS took four years of Mandarin in high school. He's minoring it at West Point. It's his third language and he's enjoying it.

There is more wiggle room in what language you take than what is being said here. It will depend on what language you took in highschool and your results on the language aptitude test. For easier languages such as Spanish, if taken previously and not at an advanced level, you will almost certainly not get Spanish again. Sometimes cadets will be voluntold to take higher level languages if they score well on the aptitude test. However, it is not unusual to switch your original assigned language to another. It just all depends on how many are taking a certain language during that time period.-2025 Cadet

Excuse me, do you know if he is able to compete for a slot to Taiwan’s Airborne school? USMA’s website says that is a foreign MIAD available to students taking Chinese, but I’m not sure if it is still available.
That's a great question - I don't know the answer to the question but will ask him next time he re-surfaces

Wow Warrior you not only have a Lao Award from a country that does not exist but pushing for a Taiwan Government nonexistent jump school.

I partook in no such training with the Lao, Sarge. My inquiry about the Taiwanese stemmed from information found on West Point’s website. Whether it is outdated or not is unknown to me, hence I asked.

Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa, Mea Maxima Culpa. I still know the Pater Noster in Latin and fortune does favor the bold. For a warrior poet try "Sing O Goddess The Anger of Achilles, son of Peleus". The Iliad is a long read but worth the time. Nothing better than a Warrior who is a Poet at heart. Best of Luck.
