I like learning languages, I speak conversational Spanish and am learning German. I intend on brushing up on both languages this summer, then taking the official qualification exams to get a rating (B1/B2/C1) in said languages. How will those ratings, and my expierence and time devoted to getting them benefit my application, if at all? Will conversational fluency benefit me? Thanks for your help.

Listing your studies as an activity won’t hurt, but they’re not necessarily seeking out multilingual applicants. If you plan on going to sea, I’d get started on Tagalog.

Unfortunately, you will likely not benefit from your foreign language proficiency in your quest for admission. My DS was near native fluent in German and my DD was a 4 year IB Japanese student. Neither one received any advantage at all. The culture at KP puts no value on foreign language.

That's unfortunate. Did it at least look good for their well-roundedness / interests / producitve hobbies etc

I definitely want to go to sea, from my understanding I would be on a US flagged merchant ship. Are they crewed with foreign crews and American officers? I saw in some videos a lot of crew are Indian/Hindi speakers, but assumed those were just Indian cargo vessels.

I would not down play the OP's initiative to learn a language just becuase the Academy doesn't seem to be specific in the line of questioning on the application form. Rather, and I say this not seeing the application, if there is a section for other accomplishments, list something like "self-taught in conversational Spanish and currently learning German". IMO, every indication of self-initiative on the part of the applicant is worthwhile.

Nah, most Filipinos speak English well.

There is a Filipino group that live near me. Younger women married older men. I am friends with several of them.

When they talk to me their English is perfect.

When they speak Tagalog - I suspect they are talking about me. ;)

Sometimes they blend English with their other language and it makes it harder.
