Hi, this year I am currently going into Marion Military Institute as a CGA self prep and am looking to purchase a laptop that fulfill the requirements for both the Coast Guard Academy, and MMI. I already know what MMI wants but I am still unsure if the Coast Guard Academy has any special requirements for laptop specs.

Since 2013 or so, I believe the issued laptops have been predominantly MacBooks. That being said, it's important to note that CGA will issue you one regardless of whether you own one or not. Per the 2024 Parent Handbook:

"Please note that every cadet will receive a laptop computer before the academic year starts, even if they already own one. You might consider purchasing your cadet a printer or desktop monitor (may not exceed 23”) if they request one; these items and other electronics are available from the Cadet Store."

So, my advice to you would be to purchase one that does the job and gives you what you need to be successful at Marion, but don't break the bank on a top of the line computer. Get a serviceable one at a reasonable price that you can perhaps give or sell to someone later on if you are accepted to USCGA for the Class of 2025.

Here's another thread on the topic:

Not Macbooks - they use PC's.

Yep, USCGA swabs are getting Dells. I saw the picture of the boxes piled up. I'm with DHS also and have had Dells since DHS was created. We get iPhones and iPads, though, go figure (more robust security, I heard).

The Macbooks had issues running some engineering software. Presently, the engineering cadets load much of their software on their issued laptops which allows them to work anywhere. We have removed the computers from some classrooms, as they were in the way, as cadets preferred their own laptops. A couple of years ago, they issued faculty the same computers. Now, any classroom with a projector can become a computerized classroom. Anyone can connector to the projector with their Bluetooth link.

Nicest dells I have ever seen. The fold into a tablet and have a 13" touchscreen I believe. Most kids end up getting a bigger monitor.

Quite a few cadets bring their MacBooks or other laptops to USCGA during their 3C year. That way if they have issues with the dell they have a backup until it is fixed.
