LapTops

Usually an off-brand and should be in your paperwork; I wouldn't be concerned about it.

In my 11 years on here I have not seen them issue an off-brand computer at USAFA. It has almost always been a Fujitsu, with one or two years being a Dell.

Computers are at the top of the list of the "What Not to Bring" section of the Instructions to Appointees document. The computers that are issued to cadets will be pre-installed with all required software and security/network/antivirus configured to operate within the USAFA computing environment.

Can the cadet bring his own laptop?

After A-Day, you should be allowed a personal laptop. USAFA even has wi-fi you can purchase (monthly fee) for use with your personal laptop.
This is the way it worked for last year's class. Family usually brings the laptops on A-Day or Parents' Weekend.

Lenovo is a well respected brand. Glad to see that they're keeping the quality up.

If you choose to bring your own laptop keep in mind that you will still have to purchase the USAFA issued laptop and use that one for any school-related work on the USAFA network.

You all...#3 accepted his appointment. One of the fantastic organizations that lovingly assists Gold Star kids with paying for college really, really, really wants to do something for him--they know his story and have met him and engaged with him at a few events over the years. We don't need it/he doesn't need help or money--but they are so eager to be part and be supportive of his 'college' experience--they are happy and proud . They offered to pay for the laptop. Is that even within the realm of the possible? Or would it be too much trouble to try to figure it out? Again, this is a boy for whom I have saved and saved for his education. I sort of keep saying, "No, he is fine. Thank you. Save it for another Gold Star child who needs it," but they keep coming back with..."What about a laptop? Isn't there a deposit?" Any advice? I feel weird writing this. Again, it is not anything that he needs--and USAFA doesn't even take the deposit like at the other SAs. It is just that we have this relationship with the organization and they have been waiting to do something for him and now it seems sort of rude to be like, 'No thanks.' Advice?

Is there any way they can present the money in the form of a scholarship? Depending on how they write the check, your DS can take it directly to the Finance Office so that it is applied to his account, which reduces the amount he repays out of his check for the upfront loans.

Once you receive the "Instructions to Appointees" it talks about scholarships and to whom the checks should be made out.

PS. Welcome to the AF.:)

Thanks Capri, I will have to learn your Wild Blue Yonder ways--but really all of the sage green boot wearing people keep saying things about the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy or send me PPTs about it.

Yes, they award the funds as a scholarship. I will ask the boy to figure out the details by following your instructions. Again, he does not need it--but this wonderful charity was built and is staffed by caring individuals who want to do something for him. So, thank you for showing an easy pathway.

Will we have to pay a monthly fee for the issued laptops?

DrMom, Understand, DD didn't necessary need the money either, but my company offers an employee children's scholarship of $2000 per year, if they qualify, which she did, without many of the typical restrictions of scholarships. So, I had her apply, and now she has that much less being deducted from her pay.

You'll learn the AF way, but may be difficult when we play Navy.

I hope meet you someday in the Springs.

A specific amount will be deducted from the cadet's pay each month for the cost of the laptop.

Actually, I raided #3's room and found the Instructions to Appointees booklet (it was sitting on top of his otherwise empty desk--so not too much of a raid)..which clearly lists the cost of the computer-and other items in a table. After he and I discuss the acceptability of this concept, I will share the table and the directions with the organization. Thanks for making this easy!

Please let me know if this is not the table you were referring to:

FYI: In the recent past, even though the female cadets do not use the barber, they must still pay for the service (the cost still comes out of their pay as shown above) as well as having to buy their own T-shirts even though these shirts are supplied (under Uniforms I assume) to male cadets. Don't know if this has changed for last incoming class.

I believe that their expenses are taken out of their income over a two year period vice a one year time frame. So they basically get a two year no interest loan.
