My DS is currently an MS2 (contracted) and would like to get Laser Eye Surgery this Spring Break or at some point this summer. He’s telling me that it is permitted because others in his battalion have had the procedure done in the past. Does anyone have any knowledge on this subject?

Depends do you need this done for anything in specific. Otherwise, I would wait till graduation.

He has been told that he will more than likely be chosen to attend airborne school this summer - and if so, he’d obviously like to have it done before going. He also would rather have it done before the summer of his MS4 year. Again, I’m just asking if anyone knows for a fact that it is permitted.

I have the same question. I know it permitted in the air force and navy; however, I'm not sure if that is only after you get commissioned.

Once he gets lasik done he has a change in his medical status that is a Medically disqualification and will need to submit a medical determination 6 months after the surgery. There is a form his doc will have to submit to verify he is fully healed. If he gets it done in the spring he will not be able to train this summer. Recommend he ask his cadre (not some other Cadets)about getting the procedure done. As a rule of thumb don’t get lasik done less than six months away from summer training, camp, or commissioning.

For Army there also seems to be a preference of PRK instead of Lasik for those interested in aviation, despite both being acceptable subject to certain parameters. Not sure why PRK bias but it does seem to be a thing.

Is there an option to have it done over the winter break for your DS?

Or accession. My son arrived on campus as a freshman with a 4 year scholarship which couldn't be activated because of the laser surgery the previous March. Even with a note from the doctor verifying complete recovery, the DODMERB dq didn't go away until the full six months had passed. (He failed pushups his first APFT, so that didn't matter).

This is kind of unrelated, but what #of push ups, sit ups, as well as time do you have to get to pass the fitness test?
