So I spoke to Misty Block regarding my waiver appeal and this is what she responded with regarding my waiver denial: "IAW DODI and Waiver Protocol does not meet standards for the following: History of asthma with exacerbation and/or medication use in the last 3 years. This decision was based on history not just current status. Timeline is not negotiable, must not have been prescribed inhaler and/or had an asthma exacerbation in the past 3 years. Even if you provide additional pulmonary function testing that demonstrates resolution, ALL criteria must be met.”

We clarified with her everything that she stated in her email and made sure if there was anything we could do to overturn this waiver denial. She basically elucidated that even with tests, a waiver seems unlikely. Now, I am visiting my doctor tomorrow as she has offered to clarify why I am extremely fit and why this issue of “variants of asthma/exacerberation” does not truly indicate my minor conditions, and why it will not be an issue at USAFA. I will also be meeting a pulmonologist on Thursday and take various lung tests (exercise, pulmonary, and possibly MCT, and if not, I will find elsewhere). I will do my best to prove I do not have actual asthma and that my past conditions should not prevent me from attending the academy and serving thereafter.

On that note, USAFA has been my dream school forever. I have come this far and my family is very proud of me. I have worked so hard all throughout high school and my life in sports to come to the day I was accepted. I am in shock that my small cases of bronchitis and "variants of asthma" for which my doctor never even told me prior when prescribing me the medications she did have prevented me from attending a place with so many opportunities, given that I am so close to attending. Therefore, I would truly appreciate ANY advice that could possibly help overturn my waiver decision. I apologize for the long post but the last few days have been very difficult for me and my family knowing my chances are getting slimmer with every denial.

Nevertheless, thank you so much for taking the time to read and please let me know.
p.s. - I sent this email to Mr. Mullen prior to even posting it on the forums.

This is the same situation that my DS is going through with the same information from Misty Block. We don't know where to turn. Where are you now with your situation? Did you get it resolved?

Nope. Nothing is resolved but I am getting doctor/pulmonologist notes and any lung tests I can do to overturn the denial. It seems unlikely regardless but I do not want to look back in the future and think I didn't do everything I could do for this. I have a plan B set in motion as you should too; AFROTC and USAFA or most services seem unlikely but since I have come this far, why not do my best to appeal?

Thanks. Is your Plan B a 4 year college? My son is stuck - not sure what to do. He is thinking about taking a gap year to see if he can work through the medical and reapply.

Yes, I will be joining the Rutgers school of pharmacy. I can't exactly apply till 2023 (that is when my waiver would be granted) so I will have to wait and figure out what to do regarding the academies.
