Last minute questions before I Day

Tomorrow is I day! Before I ditch the internet for a good amount of time, I have a few last minute questions before I Day that I'm sure you could all help out with:

1. My family and I came over to the east coast about a week early so we could have a bit of vacation time, and I brought a backpack with some personal belongings. I know that most of it will be stuff that I cannot have over the summer. I should not have to worry about having anything confiscated from the backpack, if I intend for it and all of its contents to be put in storage, correct (there is nothing in there that wouldn't be allowed during the school year)? I know that most people suggest not showing up with anything, but my parents will be leaving overseas, so I want to bring any items that I would like to have from the beginning of the academic year with me in storage, so I can have them right away.

2. I have a personal computer that I have that is relatively new (about a year), and even though its use will be incredibly limited, I would still like to have it with me because otherwise it will collect dust at my parents' house. Should I bring it with me, or pick it up from my parents some other time (Maybe PPW?).

3. I have a pair of sunglasses (standard black raybans). I'm assuming I can't wear them over the summer, but just wanted to double check. Should I throw those in the storage backpack, or keep them with me?

4. How does the process work for putting things in storage for the summer and keeping stuff with you for the summer? Do you just toss the stuff that you brought for the summer (not for storage) in that huge bag that they give you to put your issued stuff in? I don't have much that I actually want to keep for the summer – just some bars, compression shorts, and myself. Also, will flip flops be confiscated or could I bring them with me (for wearing in the room, etc)?

5. When do we say bye to our parents? Will it be right at our report time, or will it be later on in the day? My dad is doing a personal swearing-in ceremony for me, so does that change my schedule for saying bye? Asking for my mom!

Thanks guys!

If your parents are coming for PPW leave anything you don’t need for the summer with them. The computer, leave with them and have it shipped or they bring it. They will issue you flip flops. Bring the backpack with the items you want to keep. You can wait in line with your parents and say by before you enter Alumni Hall. You will get to see them for 15-30 minutes after swearing in and that will be your final good bye until call them and see them PPW. Since you will be doing a personal swearing in, you will do that during those short minutes after the mass swearing in.

You shouldn't bring anything to be stored. Anything you "need" after the summer can be mailed to you or brought PPW. Leave the personal computer. You will be issued one over the summer and having a second one will be more of a hassle that any benefit you may derive from having it. Mail the glasses after the summer. You really don't want to have to worry with caring extra stuff tomorrow. Your parents will say bye to the civilian you at your report time at Alumni Hall. They will say good bye to the Plebe you in the afternoon after the swearing in ceremony.

I just want to bring any items that I would want during the beginning of the academic year with me (just in one backpack) because it will be a hassle for my parents to send stuff as they will be living on the other side of the world. They will be in the middle of PCSing so sending me stuff will be extra annoying as all my belongings will be packed away in boxes. Just making sure, they WILL have the option for plebes to store stuff for the summer though, correct?

Sure, within limits. So if you have a few items in a backpack, that should be fine. I would be hard pressed to think of anything that you are allowed to have as a Plebe that isn't issued to you. The determination, after Plebe Summer, on you keeping the items in the backpack would be the question. It's usually a company by company decision on what Plebes can and cannot have.

A backpack will be stored just fine. Leave the computer with your parents. You get issued one and can have to sent later.

Definitely leave the computer behind for now. That’s an undue burden on detailers. Figure it out later. Perhaps it can be shipped to another relative who can then ship it to you when you know all the rules associated with personal computers. You can’t hook them up to a govt system. You won’t have that much room in your room, and you’ll have a warm angering number of things you’re trying to learn, do, understand.

Warm-angering = large number in inphonese

I know you use your iPhone to post here, so I surmise from that post (now) that you meant "iPhone-ese" as a language, like Japanese.

I will admit that I searched for the definition to both "warm-angering" and "inphonese" before I had that epiphany, however. :)

Dang iPhone. I’ve had every version, and every gen Blackberries before that. I have used “iPhonese” before, but didn’t catch that iPhone had changed that back too. Too funny.
If I need to amuse myself, I occasionally check the DYAC site. “Dang” You Auto Correct.
