I got letters of Evaluations from my Squadron Commander (Lt Col), Shirt (MSgt) and Flight Commander (Captain).
I also got letters of recommendations from my JROTC Commander (Retired Col) and Old Scoutmaster (Retired MSgt).

Even though the Letters of Recommendations are optional, it can only help you in the long run.
 
Does anyone know if you're able to use the Montgomery GI Bill while at the service academy? It wouldn't make sense to use the post 9/11 as it covers tuition to the school and there are no tuition fees at the Academy. The MGIB gives an allowance basically and since we won't be considered enlisted while at the service academy can we use it?

Though you will have a discharge from active duty at your enlisted pay grade, you will immediately enter into active duty as a cadet or midshipman in a pre-comm, duty under instruction status. You will receive active duty pay at the rate specified in law for that rank.

The Montgomery GI Bill is intended to support discharged veterans. You won’t be one!

Something to look forward to is that at graduation, your years of enlisted service can impact your O-1 pay. While most of your classmates will be paid at the “O-1 under two” level, you might be in the “O-1 over two” or even over four for some, zone. If you have over two years of service, that will always be a nice push. Have some fun and look it up on the DFAS pay tables.
 
A few fun questions:

Does anyone know if TMO will pay to ship items back to HOR or only mileage to academy (even though academy will not store anything)?

Do orders need to be received before shipping items? I would prefer to dity move in May, most likely before orders drop.

Would returning to my HOR mean I would not have another HOR move after exiting military again after commitment from academy? (In this case I would not use HOR move because it is low mileage and would be more valuable later when I have more stuff)

Does anyone know how early AD candidates report, or when we would get our reporting instructions? Should I expect to bring uniforms to the academy or will it only be a day or two before the 27th and civilian clothes suffice?

Logistics are so much fun!

My commander called me Monday and told me I was going to receive an offer to the Academy and I should be seeing it in my portal 24-48 hours but I have yet to get anything.. my application still says candidate so I don’t know what’s the holdup.

I was accepted to the Prep School and my application still says candidate (which makes sense as my new title will be cadet candidate).

If your going direct then I would say to wait until your checklist drops on your portal page.
You can always call your counselor to get more specific information.

I cannot speak for CONUS moves but I went to TMO on JBER, AK and they told me that my orders will have to say that I am allowed to ship stuff back to my HOR.
They also gave me the option to put stuff in a storage locker but you won't have access to your stuff for 4-5 years.

I am planning a partial Dity move as I do not have a lot of space to drive all my things out of Ak.

Also, if you talk to TMO or Finance about travel days, you have to tell them that you are going to the Air Force Academy and not OTS.
All the personnel I talked to treated this as I was going to OTS and not the Air Force Academy. I had to clarify that I will be at school for 5 years and not the normal 6-9 weeks.

I cannot say if this counts towards your allotted HOR move though.

As for reporting, I think if your are going Direct you get reporting instructions closer to the start of BCT. There are specific times for each squadron to report to USAFA.
As for USAFA Prep reporting, it is normally the Sunday following the first day of BMT. We have to in-process the base as we keep our previous pay grade while at the P.

Direct entry into USAFA normally gets issued all new uniforms and (Prior Enlisted) Prep School Candidates, have to bring their old uniforms.

Take all this information with a grain of salt and talk to USAFA about your concerns.
Think we just need to be ready to hurry up and wait.
