Hello everybody, I am a first term Airman and I am interested in the LEAD Program. I was wondering if I could link up with any prior enlisted that went through the process of getting an appointment to the USAFA Prep ---> USAFA. I am aware of the process , though I am not sure as to when I should inform leadership and contact an ALO. Should I take measures to make myself more competitive first and then speak with leadership and an ALO? or let them know right off the bat? That is only the beginning of my questions. I have a lot on my mind and pushing on a very strict plan with what I feel as a small amount of time. I would like to get in contact with someone who has had experience with this for more guidance. Thank you for your concern. Basic info about me:

19 years old
5 months on Current Duty Station
I have yet to achieve my 5-level, but my test dates are coming up real soon.

Plan of Action:

Achieve 5-level
Work on CCAF and attend local college
Take the SAT ( 5 Mar 2016 ) *attempt to score higher than before to be more competitive
From my understanding, submit application NLT 31 Dec 2016?

1) Talk with your squadron commander as soon as possible and show your MOTIVATION to apply.

2) FYI you could started to apply after you graduated from BMT and there's no minimum time in service required(although some commanders suggest being on base a year before applying).

Personally, I think the #5 was unwarranted. I get it! It was a joke, but I think it was done in poor taste. I am assuming your point was if you are married you cannot be a USAFA cadet.
~ Part of becoming an officer is being aware of your audience. This is not that audience.

In case you are wondering if I am a prude. I am not. I spent 20 years Friday night at the O Club singing Dennis Leary's I am an A$$hole at 10 p.m. with the F15E fighters. That song is clean compared to some of the others.
~ Hint: I only say cranium or skull because if I said a different word for that part, you would hear, including me say XXXX who said XXXX....

I think you have great intentions, and I think you are assisting everyone in the program, but remember this is not baseops.net. The audience here is more family oriented, and you can have a 16 yo HS junior or parent not understanding what LEAD is and clicking on this page for insight.

IOWS, just say...Whatever you do, do not get married.

OP, I am not trying to dissuade you, but I think you need to also be realistic from a Command aspect.
1. You are brand spanking new on the base. Releasing you may mean they now have a hole to fill.
~ I don't what base you are at, or your position, but what if they need to deploy, does that impact them?
2. What if someone else is applying and they are 21.
~ The CoC needs to give support. He will sign off on this. He may say that the 21 yr old is now looking at an age issue and will give them their full support.
3. Why are you taking it in March?
~ Makes absolutely no sense since they basically will be starting the SAT and ACT exams again in Oct. Why not Nov. Dec., etc?
~~ They superscore. The more times you take, the higher chances you will have for a better superscore.

2) The MPF will place the individual in assignment availability code AAC 05 and coordinates on AF IMT 1786 in the bottom of block 15.
The availability code will place a hold on any PCS orders until the airman is either offered an appointment or declines an appointment.
If he need be deployed, so his counselor can help.

I went through the process some years ago but I can still offer a little advice. Your ALO should be assigned to you once you open your USAFA admissions profile (if I recall correctly, maybe after you are deemed competitive). This is usually region dependent. You could contact an ALO at another base/area but ultimately one will be assigned to you, so maybe only talk about general issues and the like w/ the ALO whose contact info was posted.

I think it is important to inform your squadron commander (and of course direct supervisor) of your goals and intentions.

As far as I know there is no limit to how many nominations a commander can give out, so it shouldn't necessarily matter if there is someone else older than you also applying. That being said, I think I remember some bases requiring the wing commander's or group commander's nomination rather than a squadron commander. Talk to you education office about this.

Definitely take the ACT as many times as you can.

There are a lot of pieces to the application process. Get started as soon as you can!

Thank you to everyone who has provided great input!
I'm at Langley for the 83 NOS, glad to hear that we are considered to be on a deployment and x2's end up staying for 3 + years. I will keep in touch and use the time I have to better prepare myself for a nomination.
Here we go.
 
FYI...Lt Col Kevin Cannon is a classmate of mine, a good friend, and an amazing ALO! Even if he wasn't your ALO, I know he'd be happy to hear from an airman asking about the LEAD program!

Jayaller! Glad to hear that you're interested in the Academy. I was a SrA prior to coming here and now I'm a freshman so the application process is relatively fresh in memory. If you have any questions about applying, cadet basic training, or just how freshman year goes I'd be glad to help. I did not go to the prep school, so unfortunately I cannot provide my own input on that but I know many prior who did go and I can ask them for you!
