leadership

You might be right, Pachrian. OK, you are right. I tend to be too sharp-tongued, try as I might to temper it. However, I'm also a big fan of young people, and usually extremely supportive -- especially of SA applicants. Marvin's right, too -- I shouldn't have used the word "shipmates," because I've never been one. Make it "peers." I only know what my Mid tells me about "shipmates." He's not a rah-rah sort of person, but he will not bad-mouth Academy peers.

My point was: it's useful to recognize that words matter in this, or any, application process. It's presumptuous to assume knowledge of every leadership role at a high school. This particular "question" sounded to me like rationalizing the absence of what USNA would classify as "leadership" roles in high school. USNA tells applicants it looks for evidence of leadership. Best to provide some, and not worry what others do.

And always listen to usna1985, who is smarter and more reasoned than anyone else who posts on this board.

I would hope that a qualifiied student isn't denied an appointment because he/she wasn't a team captain or in student government.
My son did neither...not a team captain and not in student government and he's in.

Do things that you are passionate about! Academies also love community service, but explore what's out there and do something that is meaningful to you. Then when you talk about it during interviews or applications, your love and passion will shine through. It will be so much more meaningful to you as a person, no matter where you go for college.

Somehow my son figured this all out. He always has said, "it's not the show that matters; it's me, inside, that counts."

^^^ Totally agree. Strive for leadership positions where you are good at something, feel you can contribute to your school and/or allows you to grow as a person. Leadership is not about checking a box on a college application, regardless of where you apply to college. For many, leadership is about pursuing something they already enjoy and not the result of trying to build a more impressive resume.

Daughter headed for USNA: 2010
