Hi, I just joined these forums. I've been lurking around the CC forums for a couple of months, but I liked this one a lot better and so I registered.
I've been accepted to WP and will be in Beast about two weeks from now. I'm starting to get my things together, I have one question though. Some people have told me that a pocketknife is useful during Beast especially a Leatherman. I was wondering just how handy it comes in, the best one to get, and possibly where I can get one?

Thanks for your help,
Tony

Well, there is no doubt that Leatherman multi-tools are perhaps the most mind-bendingly useful tools ever createed. In my day, there was no such thing, but I ALWAYS had a Victorinox Swiss Champ handy, and I used it any number of times.

Now, if USMA is anything like USNA, whether you can have a Leatherman or any other kind of knife will depend upon your company policy, which is anyone's guess at this point.

In my day, no policy was ever voiced, and I simply kept my pocket knife hidden and locked up. Perhaps Sylvan (USMA grad) can weigh in on this with more insight.

If it were up to me, I'd bring a Wave, and roll the dice. But that's just me.

I doubt you will be authorized anything short of a toothbrush from home.
If it isn't allowed, you will just pack it till academic term starts.
Have fun at beast.
Of course, I hear the upperclassmen make your bed for you everyday so it should be pretty easy now.

They also tuck you and and give you a kiss goodnight.

That's so funny that you say that. I gave my daughter a kiss good-bye and I tucked her in under her blanket this morning before I left for work. I asked her if the "army people" are going to do that for her in two weeks. I wonder if she'll miss it?

For those that don't know me, I'm an avid camper. I've found that leathermans are the best for almost any type of activity you're doing. There are dozens of tools and gadgets for any situation. You can get them at just about any sporting/camping store.

They're even good for sawing your arm off if a boulder falls on it.

Almost as useful as a towel! :thumb:

Tony595 If you meet a guy named Sam Stedman up at beast then tell him Jack says Hi and good luck and all that. Hes a good man if you ever get the chance to know him, quality, and a friend of mine. Also good luck to you and never give up!

I really like Gerber multitools. They are pretty much the standard of excellence in my old Scout troop. Victorinox also makes a multitool. I've heard some good reviews from people about them.

I like my Swiss Army knife personally, good for all sorts of odd jobs and tasks!:thumb:

Our son took a mini leatherman with him on R-day and found it very useful during CBT. The other item he took was good quality black liner socks. He said the cotton socks issued were horrible and that a number of the cadets wore their dress black socks as liners. The liner socks go a long way to avoid blisters when marching, especially in wet conditions .

Thanks for the advice. I went ahead and got a mini leatherman. Now I'll see if i can't get those socks.

Don't sweat it, simple nylon dress socks work great. Problem is that you only have so many. If you know its a short hump, just wear a single pair to toughen up your feet. Over 8 and break out the extra socks.

I almost went ahead and bought a Gerber instead of Leatherman, but decided against it. The one Walmart had was like a swithblade gerber thing with 20 some odd bits or something. Too many attachments. I went for a barebones Leatherman Kick. Seems sufficient for my purposes.
