anyone have a gear list / loi for the 2017 Leatherneck program at Quantico. Attending from USAFA and details have been thin. Asking for a friend :). Any info greatly appreciated. Kind of on my own preparing.

Don't have one but would say comfortable boots and socks are key! You will be issued a ton of gear. Lots of the standards are always safe; PT gear, cammies, t shirts. Camel back, good multi purpose tool, duct tape, 550 cord, sharpie, map markers (dry erase but fine tip), pens, face paint, bug spray (as strong as you can find... ticks are chiggers are brutal there), small notebooks that fit in your cammie pockets. Again a lot of this you can wait on and make a run into town the first few days. A lot of patience and sense of humor (hey let's face it a usaf guy in Marine land... you are gonna get some jokes!).

On Quantico there is a small town called Q Town that has lots of small shops that specialize in all things Marines need. You can pick lots of the stuff you need there and the local Wal Mart. The Mids there will have their cars there as Quantico is about an hour from Annapolis. I am sure they will help you out with rides and to get stuff. Good luck!

Thanks ! My Squadron Air Training Officer said it'd be a good overview of the Marine Corps and a solid intro to OCS - what is the curriculum like - is it really OCS mini - or is it more of an overview of the Marine Corps. Curious as to how it works.

I wouldn't equate it to OCS. OCS is boot camp essentially with lots of leadership evaluation. Picture the full yelling thing with Dril Insructors. Leatherneck is more like a mini The Basic Scool (TBS). You will live, work and train in the TBS school, barracks and training area (it's about 15 minutes from the main side of Quantico). It's a lot of PT, hikes, land navigation (day and night so lots of map work, proper compass reading and learning terrain), squad and platoon tactics for offensive and defense operations in urban and non-Urban environments, weapons handling and proper deployment. There is also lots of intro to how the USMC works, traditions, culture, etc. along with fun stuff like shooting and blowing stuff up. Every year it can be slightly different but be prepared for something physical. The USMC PFT is 3 miles, pull ups and sit ups. The O course will be given. The e course will be run (6 miles in gear with obstacles). Not sure on hike distance but be ready for 6-10 miles ish with possibly 60 lbs (that isn't that bad). TBS is 6 months long and moved up to company and battalion tactics. Leatherneck won't go that far but is a good intro to the building blocks to that. It really prepared me well for TBS.

During all this Mids will be given leadership positions in and out of the field to evaluate leadership ability. So a common one would be a squad attack. They look at how they prepared, deliver the op order, how it was executed, how they handled adversity during it, etc. The staff is usually a Capt or Major as a Platoon leader from USNA. Usually 1-2 2ndLts are also assigned ago help teach, train and evaluate.

+1 Hoops.

There is often a great debate about Leatherneck vs OCS amongst USMC Officers. You did a great job of describing the difference without engaging the emotional side of the discussion.

Quick question - I cant tell from the video - Utilities WITH SEWN Nametapes or Without? How many sets?

Sewn on. I would recommend 4 if you have them. That would be a safe number. There are washers and dryers in the TBS barracks.

Not to be too harsh but quite honestly this information should have already been made available to you. The platoons have been set since mid April and you should have received emails from somebody in your midshipmen chain of command that you can email and ask instead of on here.
Not only that, but there are 4 of your classmates from USAFA here at leatherneck right know who I'm sure you've at least met before and could email and ask for the gear list.

Don't worry about buying marpats. You're issued two sets to borrow from USNA. Your platoon commander should save two sets for you once you arrive in Annapolis.

If you have any questions you can ask me (I'm at leather neck now) or one of your classmates, but it's highly unlikely I'll be able to respond in any reasonable amount of time given how busy the days are here.

when are you headed to leatherneck? my son is there right now. I will ask him what you need . he told me there were some air force guys there. he told me they had different reasons for being marines . anyway I will ask him about a gear list.

Right - exactly - should have - I'm sure it will be, but I had another event fall through and got told two days ago by the powers that be that I could pick up leatherneck. Certainly assume the chain of command will catch up with the last minute change and get me info. Was just trying to get ahead of the curve in case I can prep. Any info that I need to know in advance is appreciated. For example - don't have orders yet - asssumed I'd report to Quantico - so you're saying we form up in Annapolis ? Again a key detail.

Thank you. - I would greatly appreciate that! Headed to next increment in two weeks.

You will report to Annapolis. They bus everybody back up to Annapolis each weekend. The gear list is extensive, expect to spend $500-$600 or more. If you haven't bought USMC boots yet I would buy bates lites since you won't have enough time to break in Danners or Bellvilles. It's going to be very hot at Leatherneck block II.... be prepared for mid 90s with very high humidity every day. Also be prepared to sleep less that 5 hours every night.

What I was told by one of your classmates is that the USAFA kids had a screener to attend Leatherneck and only 5 of 9 were chosen. Did they decide to send a 6th? I would rely heavily on those people to get the information you need considering they are in your situation. The midshipman chain of command may be slow as most of them are scattered all over the country on leave/doing other trainings

Wow, bussing each week. That sucks. Glad we could have cars! If you have USAFA brethren there buy their stuff off them from block 1. Save you some money. I second bates lites. For summer time and only 4 weeks... they will work just fine, little to no break in time.
