Leave/ liberty

I was on the website for USNA and they said leave is granted on the following:
* Thanksgiving
* Christmas vacation at the end of the fall
* Mid-term leave during spring semester
* A short break at the end of spring semester and before Commissioning Week
* At least 3 weeks of summer vacation.

Does anyone know how long each of these breaks are usually? Or the dates?
And does anyone know what exactly a "weekend liberty" is? What restrictions and whatnot.

Leave is automatic...
Liberty is earned ability to leave campus...

They should have a calendar on the site that will give you a breakdown...
 
I pulled those Anchor Dates but I Day for 2009 is July 1st not June 26 as shown on the Anchor Date Calendar----anyone have some input here??

My 3/C Mid has had a few 'weekend liberties' -- sometimes they're a Sat overnight, sometimes both Fri and Sat, and they're always framed w/ a caveat re: completing all obligations before leaving. I forget the precise geographic restriction. It's something like 22 mi.

For plebes, liberty is short and hard-earned. You're just off the yard when you're on liberty. Plebes (this year) typically get "town liberty" on Saturday until midnight. They can leave the yard, and go about 22 miles away--to a sponsor's house, to the mall, whatnot. That 22 miles is an old number, I think it's a little more this year, actually, but you get the idea. Plebes get "yard liberty" on Sundays until like 6pm. That means they can go to church on the yard, eat where and when they want (on the yard) and come and go from Bancroft as they please--without leaving the yard.

After plebe year, weekend liberty is more frequent--they can leave the yard Friday night and not return until Sunday evening.

LEAVE is a bigger deal. On leave, even plebes can go home, travel farther, etc. (But even then, they have to request permission to go.) Leave is what you see on the calendar--Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break.

I'm sure there are military definitions for those, but what I've given are the basic civilian explanations!

Just to reinforce how sparse "leave" is for plebes, please note that when parents return their plebes to the yard at the end of Plebe Parents Weekend in August, the upperclass play Christmas Carols out the windows of Bancroft--because that's the next time many plebes will see their parents!

When I was on my CVW a couple of weeks ago I specifically asked about this...on leave they can go anywhere in the "tri-city" area (Baltimore, DC, and Annapolis) they said this is one of the many reasons the new Dant is so well liked
 
On LEAVE they can go anywhere they want (barring any ATFP restrictions....), I think you're talking about liberty.


Saw a few Mids at a Capitals game the other night.
 
Under normal circumstances:

LIBERTY is a privilege.
LEAVE is a right. LEAVE can be withheld due to misconduct, lack of performance, or "operational" reasons.

Weekday Liberty is liberty granted during any weekday.
"Full Weekend Liberty" commences after the last military obligation on Friday and expires on Sunday (or Monday) evening.
"Normal Weekend Liberty" goes down depending on class and military obligations but expires late that same night or early the next morning (in other words, you have to return to USNA for the wee-hours) on weekends and observed holidays.

Yard Liberty is the ability to travel almost anywhere on the yard without requesting permission (I believe this still extends to the Naval Station).
Town Liberty is the ability to travel outside USNA.

There is no break between the end of Plebe Summer and the start of the Academic Year.

1. The upperclass will tell you (plebes) that Plebe Summer is not over, just because you had parents weekend. Plebe Summer continues beyond PPW.

2. Reform of the Brigade happens in between there too. During plebe summer, there are 10-20 plebes for every upperclassmen. Once the brigade returns from summer assignments, there are now 3 upperclassmen for every 1 plebe. It's an intimidating milestone.

THEN the Academic Year starts.

No breaks! :thumb:

This was just addressed a thread or two ago with a smile... Reform of the Brigade occurs a few days before the start of the academic year. The upper classes come back from summer leave and training, settle back into company area, sort out classes, buy books, get briefings, meet the new plebes. Plebes, meanwhile, after the brief respite of PPW, put their heads down and get through the end of Plebe Summer, then transition to their company areas and under the control of their company leadership, while also getting briefings, buying books, getting computers issued, etc. Just gets more intense with a couple thousand more upperclass breathing down your neck. Stand by to start memorizing the upperclass names in your company, hometowns, etc. Oh yeah, you usually get to do a p-rade just for them, the one time they get to sit in the bleachers and watch a parade as mids.
Break? Nope. Part of the joy of Plebishness.
 
As noted previously, PPW IS your only break between Plebe Summer and Ac year. Enjoy it. And yes, Christmas carols were played on Sunday of PPW in at least some wings of Bancroft last year.

Keep in mind that liberty can be gained or lost very easily, and the rules can be different from one company to another. This Ac year, Plebes have generally had Town liberty from ~1030 to midnight on Saturdays, but on occasion, some companies have had their Town liberty curtailed for several hours. Three or four hours out of about 12 is a substantial cutback.

Leave begins after a Mid's Last Military Obligation (LMO) is complete. This year, at least, watch schedules have been adjusted (at least in my Mid's company) to make sure that the Mid's LMO is their last exam/class prior to a particular break. That may not always be the case. Usually, leave is scheduled to end at 1800 on the day they are due to return. However, at Christmas, that time was extended to 2200, or 10 PM.

Keep in mind that report times mean the time that a person must be present and ready for duty, NOT the time they should be coming through the gate! The PS cadre will make sure that you understand this fully....."If you are early, you're on time. If you are on time, you're late. If you're late, you're left behind."
 
^^^^ You mean liberty, it is my understanding that the 22 mile restriction is going away. My Mid also has taken weekend liberty and traveled much father than the DC-Balt area - as both a plebe and youngster. I do believe a chit was required in at least one circumstance as he left earlier in the day from when liberty - weekend was to start.

Leave you can go anywhere - For overseas you do need to file some travel documents. You also get leave papers that you sign and carry with you.

Leave is not a guaranteed "right."
 
22 mile limit is going away? How great would that be! We live 50 miles away, so being able to bring the boy home to get away on liberty would be great (at least while he wants to do that in the first years...).
