Hello. I apologize if this information is out there, I searched the forums and couldn't find anything. I am applying for USMA, USAFA, and USNA and am scheduled for my medical exams next week. Unfortunately, my parents informed me that I had Legg-Calve-Perthes disease at the age of 4 as I was filling out the medical questionnaire. As I searched for information online I came across DoDI 6130.03 that specifically lists history of Perthes as a disqualifying condition. Obviously this was extremely disappointing, so I have two quick questions:

1) My medical was initiated by the USMA so it is my understanding that once an official determination is made, USMA will automatically consider me for a waiver if I am deemed competitive. Since the Air Force application just opened, I am not as far along in that process. Will I have to do something in order to have USAFA consider me for a waiver, or will that process initiate once I have reached a certain threshold?

2) Has anyone known or heard of anyone receiving a waiver with a history of this condition? I participate in numerous athletic activities and have never had an issue, but I know that the present status of the condition may not be the concern. With service academy timelines being so tight I'm trying to prepare myself to do everything possible as quickly as possible so there is at least some hope of reaching my goals. If there is any advice on this potential battle I sincerely appreciate it.

A#1 = Google "DoDMERB;" Hit "Questions about the Process;" If you meet the criteria for paragraphs 11-12 for any SA, then paragraphs 11-21, apply with the possible exception of para 20.

A#2 = There's a 100% chance you will NOT receive a waiver... "if" you don't apply to the SAs. Sustained successful performance without complications puts you in a far better position, than if you endured complications through the years. here's no guarantee, but better to be in the position you're in. Re-read paragraph 18 for a more direct - "indirect answer."

Thank you, that was very helpful. I'm excited to start the process and I'll let others know what I learn!
