Let’s Talk Cars…Old Favorites, Your First, Dream, The One You Wish You Still Had, Car Stories Any Kind, How You Learned To Drive …and more

I was lucky enough to have my Uncle (who was really only a few years older than I was) live with us after returning from duty in Vietnam. He bought himself a white Corvette with the T-bar top (circa 1976 or so). I begged him and eventually won agreement that I be allowed to drive it to our junior year prom! I admit that my date and I cruised around town and the venue parking lot showing off for much longer than we should have before going to the dance. I can't find any pictures but here is one from the internet...

Best car I ever had was a 2000 suburban, dubbed ‘the looser cruiser”.

It was the best, bc we raised our family in it. All the camping trips, learn to drive moments, and every other family memory saturated into the torn leather.

I cried (literally) when it was demolished by a drunk driver, when parked in front of our house one night. The only car I’ve ever been emotionally attached to.

Sleek. Major date points.

If your Suburban got demolished, I can't even imagine what happened to the other vehicle.

My suburban was moved several hundred feet. The other cars front wheel axel came off and rolled up our driveway. His car was in several pieces.

Our extended family was at our house and was moments away from being there, getting into their own cars to leave. It was chilling, scary, shocking all rolled into one.

Drunk driver wasn’t injured if you can believe it. He crawled out a window and ran. Hubby saw him and gave chase. It was the loudest, creepiest noise I’ve heard.

I learned to drive a tractor, go-cart, motorcycle, and a standard at the age of 10.

My Dad was a car guy to say the least. He only bought and sold Ford’s from years 1954-1957. He and my Mom were members of the local Thunderbird Car Club and we spent many weekends at car events. He enjoyed drag racing too! When I think back on being in one of my Dad’s old cars with him and my siblings flying down a country road at 100 plus mph 😱
Can’t believe we did that! Plus with no seat belts! 😳

My Dad even went as far as extending the back of the garage to make it a 6 car garage with air conditioning because he loved being in the garage tinkering with his cars and Lionel Train Sets that he would set up little cities on huge sheets of plywood and conduct them. I can still hear that engine whistle blowing and see that smoke billowing out. Good memories 🥰

This is a photo of my Dad’s ‘57 Thunderbird named Blue that I inherited from him when he passed. The first car he let me loose in when I turned 16 in the late 80’s was a ‘57 Thunderbird that he refurbished. My Mom still has it in her garage.

My brand-new neighbor that moved in two weeks ago has a "For Sale" sign on a '66 red Mustang in his driveway. It's a beauty. I wonder how long I can hide it in my garage until my wife notices?
Too bad they don’t have car safes. I have snuck many a gun past my wife and straight into the safe.

Especially coming into USNA via Gate 8 over the bridge, and encountering the lurking DoD cars snugged up by the Worden Field houses. The speed limit is 25. Not 26.

Did any of your family wagons have the rear-facing seats in the back?
Now that you mention it, dad’s green Chrysler station wagon, with faux exterior wood paneling, had folding back seats like this:

My younger sisters always called dibs on the back seat. They liked waiving at people in cars. I remember one time Dad complaining that it cost him $4.35 to fill it up. Shortly after, he bought a Chevy Vega hatchback – a real maintenance pig of a car. He regretted that one and wouldn’t even pass it on to my sisters. I came home one summer and it was gone. My baby sister would later get the manual VW Rabbit from Dad.

That’s the seat I remember! Early Pre-Minivan Era!

Driving back across the Great Salt Lake Desert at 0500 on a very clear morning in 1969 and saying Bonneville is right here Self What can this Cutlass Do? Answer was 130. Remember practicing double clutching a lot till I got it right.:coo2l:

Okay, it’s a gorgeous day here in Annapolis, sunny, breezy, warm but not awful, low humidity. I’m headed out with BB (Big Blue) for an extended Italian tune-up on River Road (curves) and I-97 (and Amish Market, Wine Cellars of Annapolis, Admiral Cleaners, Bagels And [the other good bagel place]) and maybe lunch at Giolitti’s Deli.

I have room for 1 pax on the manifest. DH is deep-cleaning the grill, and I’ll bring him a Roman sub with extra hot peppers. Leaving…now.

I’m posting an internet glamor pic because it is the best representation of the color (Night Race Blue), and accurate as to make, model and year. In the sunshine, the color looks black. This pic is just right.

Italian tune-up.

First Car = 1969 Camaro bought in 1979. Wish I still had it, but too much rust.

Regret Selling =1970 Series 1 240Z. Bought it for $3,000. Sold it for $23,000. It would be worth close to $40,000 today.
As for me, I am more of a horsewoman than a car person. However, my DH still has his high school car, a '68 Camaro. I tried to get him to sell it early in our relationship, but backed off which led to our long and happy marriage. As usual, he was right to keep it.
DH taught our KP DD to drive on a stick shift which she loves. No one ever wants to borrow her car because they can't drive it. That is, except for her BF, the son of a truck driver, who has been driving sticks since he was very young. DD thinks real men know how to drive a stick.

RIP to the Challenger & Charger - Heard they are closing them out.
Yes, I saw that too. I had the Vette in for a service, and I went to the showroom to check out the mid-engine Vette, got to talking classic muscle cars with the sales staff.

Here are some pics of the showroom Vette in “Rapid Blue.”

Ma’am, if a random mid waves and mouths “bacon” in the future, assume it’s me.
