Let's Celebrate EARTH DAY!!!

It may be the twilight zone to you but it's called an open debate on an issue to me. Algore is essentially saying the same thing you're saying by shutting down any debate with an open forum by not having to answer direct questions. If you want all the facts, or just don't buy into the cap and trade deal, you're in the twilight zone?

Discuss all you want. I am more than happy to engage in an intelligent discussion and learn a great deal from the information, insight and links that folks post.

I just don't like people putting words in my mouth and telling others what I think. go back and read all my posts carefully. I never once mentioned greenhouse gasses, the ozone layer or cap and trade.

Also, someone please read post #41 and tell me what it means - I don't get it.

Who put words in your mouth? It's a dynamic discussion, the topic drifts occasionally with points made. Sorry.

I did read all of your posts and your first point was:

"You youngsters should check out "Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson. It was a groundbreaker."

I went from there and the other issues are germane to that topic.

They banned regular light bulbs we use now (manufactured in Kentucky), and require in the near future that we all use the energy-saving "green" fluorescent bulbs...
...which are manufactured in China
...and contain Mercury that could poison anyone nearby if one breaks.
So lets ship all these "green" light bulbs to America in gas-guzzling cargo ships, and when you're done with them (they break or go out), make sure you drive them in your SUV to the nearest recycling center, remembering the whole time, that you are, in fact, saving the planet.

The Canadian government did the same thing.
A recent study found that money spent on gas/heating rose significantly--the "green" bulbs don't give off any heat!:yllol:

Post 41:

Line 1: I was referring to Sen. Ted Kennedy.

Line 2: From Ace Ventura

Line 3: Referring to why the military is paid so much in tax dollars, don't need them picking up glass in a park unless they have nothing better to do (and typically they don't if that's what they're doing).

Come on JAM, I can't figure out why ANY of that needed explaining.

When you take in "there" then you're "attacking" her. I saw this conversation as a natural progression too.

Maximus - my apologies for being unable to get my head around and follow this thread. I completely missed your post #39 will address that and go from there chronologically.

While Dr. Williams is not a scientist, I'll take his word and studies over Senator Nelson (also not a scientist) and his brilliant career as an Eco extremist.
Why? Walter Williams studied ecomonics.
Sen Nelson was not an eco extremist. He was a steward of the environment - an important distinction. Many, if not most, environmentalists are not whacko extremists and to lump them together is dangerous.

There seems to be a conclusion being drawn between "Silent Spring", Sen Nelson's "extremism" and the rise of malaria in third world countries.
It's a little more complicated than that - malaria did not rise up because DDT was banned in the US. Malaria was eliminated from the US decades before DDT was banned and has not made a comeback. In fact, some scientists make the case that since some malarial parasites had become resistant to DDT - hence the banning of it years ago has allowed it to remain effective today and a part of control by spraying it on the walls of homes.
The current (past decade or so) issue of Malarial control and DDT has nothing to do with Sen Nelson - he left the Senate in 1981 and died in 2005.

I do agree with Walter Williams conclusion that DDT is can be very effective in malarial control. I support that - it does have barriers to implementation and should be one part of malaria prevention.

I fail to see where you are drawing a conclusion between the awarding of the Medal of Freedom in 1995 and distancing from Einhorn. If Einhorn was the "founder" why did Walter Cronkite NOT mention him in a documentary in 1970, 7 years before he became a murderer?

Post #40 - right back at ya hornetguy. you don't know anything about me, stop pretending that you do.

Post #41 and 42. Again, I have no idea what they mean. If someone can explain, perhaps I can address.

Post #48 - I stand by my statement - on both sides of the aisle - Rachel Carson's book was a groundbreaker. There is quite an interesting display in the Smithsonian museum of American History.

Post #49. Heating a house with light bulbs is incredibley inefficient and expensive considering the cost of electricity.

Still don't get it. Are you saying the Sen Nelson was a murderer. btw - I concur on Kennedy but that is a whole 'nother discussion
Never watched Ace Ventura. I prefer films.
We pay the military to pick up glass in a park?
I am still lost......sorry.

Post #51. I am back in the twilight zone.....

Post #43 & 44. Thanks for the info. The Heritage Foundation is not unbiased, to be sure. I am wary of picking my sources then picking my conclusions. However, the issues of cap and trade agreements, emmissions and air pollution are tricky and controversial.

Ace Ventura is a film (Academy Award for Best Picture). Because members of the military are not on hourly wages, but generally have a "work day", if they are "picking up glass in a park" during the work day for "Earth Day", then yes, they are being paid. No, I'm not saying Nelson is a murderer, yes I am saying Kennedy was.

I'm hoping this doesn't become the norm for posting, explaining the same posts 3 times.

Make that 4 times. Please?
Ace Ventura is a film (Academy Award for Best Picture).
you are gonna have to prove this one to me.....
You have a credible link? I looked and looked.

:lolatyou:

:screwy:

I also must call  - Ace Ventura never won ANY type of Academy Award.

Haha the Academy would NEVER give a movie like that ANY sort of award.

I'm still bitter because the Dark Knight didn't win.

Hahaha....it would NEVER win, but it was a funny movie.

I can't rescue everyone from their boxes...

I disagree with a few points here but, I don't want to make enemies. Let me leave this thread with one statement: I believe that Global Warming is possibly an issue but, I most strongly disagree with the current tide of "environmentalists", and I believe they have nothing but their own interested in mind, not stewards of the environment. That includes Nelson (before he passed away) and Al Gore.

Maximus - feel free to disagree. Disagreement in and of itself, does not an enemy make, at least in my book.
There are extremes on both ends no doubt. As with most debatable subjects -the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Glad there appears to be a consensus that Ace Ventrua is NOT a film :shake:
