Despite submitting a college transcript, if a re-applicant finishes everything else in the application including retaking a SAT and receiving a good score, is it possible for a college re-applicant to receive an LOA. From what I understand besides athletes LOA's don't seem to have specific criteria? Can someone further explain? Thanks so much

From what I have heard, LOA's are given to students who are outstanding and finish the application before receiving a nomination. The Academy then gives the student an LOA saying "we will take you if you get a nomination".

I have also heard that students who are outstanding and receive a nomination but are undergoing the medical qualification process might be given one as well. This is the school saying "get medically qualified and we will take you".

As a college re-applicant, I wouldn't worry about it at all. The chances of getting an LOA are very slim as a college applicant because the board cant even open our application until fall transcripts come out in December. But no one knows what goes on in those boards so its possible as a college applicant to receive one but VERY unlikely. Im drawing this info from USNA as a 3rd year applicant so USMA's LOA process might be slightly different.

I'm a reapplicant and I actually got an email yesterday saying I was competitive for an LOA, and that they want my 8th semester high school transcripts as soon as possible

I guess they were looking at your last years application? Because 2022 application didn't open yet correct? But congrats that's awesome!

USMA does not use LOA's as much as USNA, except for recruited athletes. For others, LOA's are up to the Regional Commander (RC). Some give them more than others and normally only to very high potential candidates.

Just got an email today from my RC saying he's in the process of requesting a LOA for me and that my counselor just needs to send my 8th transcript. I'm a college re applicant!

What was your ACT/SAT score, if you don't mind my asking?

Also, for us re-applicants, does it matter which two professors we get to fill out our evaluations?

My ACT isn't outstanding; in fact I signed up to take another one in September. I honestly think my EC's/leadership was the strongest portion of my app. From my RC in May: "The SOEs can come from any subject, although we would prefer for them to come from either math, English, science or ROTC."

Did you just straight up ask your RC for an LOA?

@BSCAR I didn't bring it up at all actually. Do you really think I just 'asked' for a LOA and they requested one?

I thought that asking would've been a rather bold thing to do; it sounded like you had asked given that you knew he was requesting one for you. I was incredulous that it seemed as though you had done it and even more so that it had evidently worked.

He emailed me because he needed my 8th semester transcript to complete the request, not because I asked to be handed a LOA.

Congrats man!

Congratulations!! That's awesome! Quick question did you finish your CFA yet? But hey awesome that's fantastic news!

I know of one college re-applicant who received LOA last year. He was in a extremely competitive district with a awesome file, but there just was not a slot for him. His academic record was even too good for civil prep and he had an ROTC scholarship to the state university. He received an LOA and was offered an appointment, which ironically, he turned down and decided to stay at his civilian school.

You'd be surprised how often that happens. Candidates get the TWE - are determined to reapply, but then get to their civilian school and love it.

Bringing this old thread back. Has anyone heard of anyone else getting LOAs from college, and when they heard/how far along in the reapplication process they were when they were notified? Thanks!

Would also be interested to know if anyone has heard more of this as a college reapplicant myself.

I am going to agree to disagree here, to the supposition that "USMA doesn't use LOAs as much as USNA".
Both academies issue precious few of them. It's not like USNA is handing them out like candy.

Most estimates (which are pure conjecture, because neither SA lists this data) put LOA's right around 10%.
You are setting yourself up for disappointment if you set your sights on getting an LOA, and it's not even important to the process.

If your goal is to receive an Offer of Appointment, then set your sights on that goal. How you get it doesn't matter.
I can guarantee you that after cadets take the oath on R-Day, they are all the same (LOA or not).
