Letter of Assurance (LOA) received

@Jen88 When you have time, please share some stats or interesting things about your DD!

Thanks, again. She started her app last December for SS, but went to SLE at WP. She’s in CAP, she’s a swimmer (though not AF fast! Ha ha). She’s wanted to go to USAFA since she was seven. I know an LoA isn’t a done deal, but she’s feeling good. :)

Thanks to everyone for your advice. :)

@Jen88 CAP is an amazing program. You are correct, the LOA isn't a for sure, but it is a great chance. The way I see it, nothing is for sure until they have signed the dotted line and are dropped off for I Day. Class of 2024!

Even dropping mine off this year for iday although was such an awesome, exciting feeling I was sick to my stomach the whole time of BCT praying he didn’t get hurt and be a turn-back for 2024. Praise the lord he’s there and doing great. Loves where he is and said it was the best place he can ever imagine being. Bright skies ahead. Good luck to everyone applying this year, I wish you well.

Also be sure to take copies of your LOA to the nomination interviews.

My DS told one nominating committee he had one from USAFA and they told him he must be talking about an LOE. USAFA, they said, didn’t give many LOA’s and he must be mistaken. He then passed around the copies and watched the committee members look at him in surprise.

Lesson here is to notify the MOC office you have the LOA but take copies to the interview. Communications fail. You take responsibility to make sure they know.

In the end DS got a dual nom to USAFA and USNA from that group.

Congrats and go get that nom!

Congrats on the LoA. My daughter received one Saturday. Very exciting! My question is, who would she even go about contacting in the MOC offices? We don’t have contacts there. Interviews are this weekend. :)

She could call each the MOC offices and ask to speak with their nominations coordinators. Most MOCs have someone who takes charge of getting all the paperwork in, arranging interview dates and times, and notifying the interviewees. This person may be purely administrative (meaning that's their only job right now), or they be on the nominating committee as well.

My son received his Letter of Assurance late last night. We are extremely proud and excited. His application is complete. He is just waiting for the nomination. My question is, how likely is it that he won't receive the nomination? His interview went perfect, but it isn't a guarantee. Has anyone heard of someone getting an LOA and not receiving the nom.?
Congratulations on receiving a LOA! Did it come via USPS mail or did it show up on the online portal?

It showed up in the online portal then an email was sent a couple of days later. We were not checking the portal because everything was completed. My son saw the email Saturday morning before XC practice.

I assume that the only condition of the LOA is obtaining a nomination?

Another bite-his-nails waiting period to get through. The odds are hugely in his favor now, so he should try to relax and think about other things.
I know, easy for me to say.

I’ve shared before, but DS’s room, when he finally made it there after the loooonng Iday (USNA), had an empty bunk. His roommate was turned away after being dropped off and processing through at medical, for an injury that had originally gotten him sent to NAPS the year before...that hadn’t healed to USNA medical requirements. Very sad. But yes, these things DO happen!

Unless you are a recruited Athlete, The key stat is the SAT/ACT scores and Grades thats what I have seen so far.

@THParent Yes, he is just waiting on the nom now. It is still a stressful time, but we all have good feelings. He was told noms will go out before Thanksgiving. Now it's the waiting game.

I have direct knowledge of someone getting an LOA and didn't receive a nom. A close family friend applied to both USAFA and USNA. Her top choice was USNA, but she received an LOA to USAFA in October. She received 2 noms to USNA but none to USAFA. She was not admitted to USNA, and was holding an LOA with no Nom to USAFA. Ironically, thanks to these boards, I heard of someone in our congressional district with a Nom to USAFA that was medically disqualified. She was able to contact her MOC, who was able to substitute her name for the med DQ'd individual on his slate, and had an appointment soon after. She is now an AF 1st LT, so it worked out in the end. So it can happen. I don't think its a common occurrence, though.

On the LOA it mentions that USAFA will inform senator and MOC about the LOA the prsopective student has recieved. So I am sure they will consider that

@falconchic88 Thank you for the info. That is my worry for him, but we have a good feeling. DS call the MOC office today and confirmed the LOA was received. So, now we still wait. He was informed everyone will be notified before Thanksgiving.

They will consider the candidate with an LOA, but as stated here before, the MOC is not obligated to give them a NOM. On occasion for whatever reason, some MOC’s have not given NOMs to LOA recipients. I would bet falcon chicks friends MOC knew of the LOA, but still didn’t give the NOM for whatever reason. Only later after her candidate friend reached out to the MOC after learning of someone on the slate being a medical DQ was she fortunate to earn that NOM as an alternate. Some may consider her “lucky”, but often times you hold your own luck in your hands and it’s up to you to work your own magic. This is an excellent example of persistence and follow through of the process shown by a candidate!
Sadly, the most diligent and highly qualified candidates still don’t get their appointments for different reasons, but still go on to follow other great paths in life.

Congratulations! Quite a relief to see that LOA come in. I remember the amazing joy my DS showed when he got his LOA. As an added bonus, it was on his birthday. He immediately contacted his MOC to let them know, and everything worked out for him 2 years ago.
