LETTERS BEING SENT OUT THIS WEEK FOR NON SELECTS (NROTC)

One last question (hopefully), I said this earlier but no one gave me a solid answer:

I emailed the scholarship team about my application a couple weeks ago and they said that I was an alternate, but my portal does not reflect this.

Is this a problem? Or does the portal just not say anything for alternates?

I did not receive any email notifying me of this status either so I do not know how long I have been an alternate.
There is no portal status for being an alternate. So it isn't unusual to not see anything in the portal.

Are non-selected applicants given the opportunity to see their scores? My DS was pretty disappointed in his virtual interview, as the interviewer seemed distracted, was interrupted multiple times, and cut his answers short
As someone who has had to conduct interviews virtually, I will say they are challenging for both the interviewer and the interviewee. If it can be done in person, it is a much better option. As far as answers being cut short, sometimes less is more. Sometimes applicants will ramble, get off subject or repeat themselves, particularly when they are mentally searching for an answer. Fully answer each question, but don't stray off course in your answer. Not saying your DS did this; just general interview advice for anyone who reads this. For my DS, I was able to set him up at my work with some leaders who were experienced interviewers. They gave him honest feedback and suggestions for improvement. I also encouraged him to video record himself answering questions he though he might be asked. DS was selected for an ISR and was told the LT who had done his initial interview had called the recruiting district CO right after DS left to recommend the ISR.

So glad to see your comments regarding the interview @GWU PNS. Too many applicants take this aspect of the application process as a given formality and don’t realize how it can help or hinder the final decision.
I think my DS was the opposite. In reading some of the threads of other applicant's credentials, his seem to be fairly mid-range. However, his interview lasted over two hours with two different people and he thought it went very well. My theory is that this was the determining factor for him. I think he got the point across that he really wants to be a Marine Officer and that he has what it takes.

Just to avoid any confusion, my remarks regarding interviews and their importance are 100% Navy Option oriented. I have not reviewed any records from Marine Options as they are all coordinated by their district ROO.

So, as the title suggests, letters will be sent out this week for those who were non-selects for Navy Option NROTC. I do not know if Marine Options will be notified of non select status, but it seems as though most have been notified if they were selected. I would recommend MO who have questions reach out to their ROO for their status.

There will be around 138 notifications going out, and there are still around 150 that are sitting in the alternate queue. This does not mean every alternate will be selected, but I would say it means if you were non-selected and proceed on to be a College Programmer, you have a very good chance at the 3 year sideload next year.

Without going into too much detail, I took a look at most of the scores for non-selects and a driving factor seems to be performance on the interview. It's hard to make a generalized comment about why that can be a factor, but I believe people tend to focus a LOT on extra-curricular activities but do not really prepare for the interview process. Just something to consider for those of you who are looking to apply for the next cycle which just opened up.
CAPT Meyers- So trying to focus on the positive here, can you tell us what the overall selection rate is compared to the number of completed and submitted applications?

Over the years, the selection rates have ranged from 52-64 percent. Tier 3s a bit lower. COVID has skewed our numbers a bit because for at least 2 years we did not have full sets of SAT data.

When you think about the financial and life benefits that are involved here plus the overall excellent quality of the candidates that is amazing. I am surprised there aren't a ton more candidates who want to serve. My son attends a school where an NROTC scholarship turns into a full ride. It really is a "home run" for everyone involved: For the Navy, they get a candidate who really wants to serve. For the candidate it is an opportunity to serve and have your education paid for, do some really cool stuff, and make some friends for life. I should add my son (and I am sure many other applicants) had decided that he would be a programmer had he not been selected. For the schools, many end up doing better since the Navy pays full tuition and while the school covers room and board, it may be less than what the school originally offered in merit or financial aid. Of course for the parents, being able to have your child attend college for almost no out of pocket cost is incredible. It really is a "home run" for all parties. :)

Anyone gotten rejection notification yet today?
I have not received any notifications today, I believe rejections are going out Wednesday or Thursday and probably in the afternoon. We just have to sit and wait it out.

There were several hundred who have not received any notification. Basically, the 138 are going out to those who are not mathematically possible for selection this year. So there are more than 150 sitting in the queue who won't get letters yet. There are a lot of variables that go into how many alternates get selected, including which tier of major a person selected. It's best to wait a couple weeks and it will all settle out.
Please correct me if this is incorrect but does this mean it is unlikely for alternates to be notified of non-select status this week?

Letters go out tomorrow so most likely early next week.
I know this is so trivial, but maybe you could humor me :) if my DS was told today he's still in "no decision made" status - does this mean he's definitely on the waiting list, or that it's possible his portal (which we can no longer access) might not be updated to non-select?

I can still access my portal. I do not know how. Maybe I am using the wrong website but I doubt it.

Also, will the notifications for selection go out all on one day or periodically as spots need to be filled in?

The non selects will go out as a batch. The alternates will trickle out. I know this makes no one happy. And the portal updates will lag a bit for those who can still access them.
