I am deciding on who to ask for letters of recommendation and I'm a little torn. Does the position of the writer have an impact? I am considering asking my assistant varsity baseball coach for one, as I feel he knows me better and would write a better letter. Would USMA find it weird that it's not from head varsity coach?

West Point just wants to see recommendations/statements from a high school English teacher, math teacher, and a physics or chemistry teacher.

USMA doesn't require LOR from coaches, although your congressman might for nominations. I know for my congressman we were required to have 2 LOR from a coach, teacher, principle, or counselor.

MOCs vary in what they want, but USMA strictly only wants Math, English, and Physics/Chem teachers; one of each, totaling 3 letters. These are called SOEs (School Official Evaluations).
