I am the father of KP midshipman.

DS is in the North Sea right now and asked me to ask y'all about life in the Coast Guard. Specifically, if he were to seek a commission in the USCG after graduation from KP, what is the relatively likelihood of him getting any say as to where he is assigned? If not, is there any rhyme or reason to the process? How often do Coast Guard officers typically move in their first five years? Those are just ideas, but anything y'all think would be relevant to a person considering the Coast Guard would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

I will say, that because of their familiarization with USCG regs (license exam) a lot of Kings Pointers go into inspections which is a fairly tame, stay in one place kind of gig.

The KPers I know are in inspections.

CG officers get a "shopping list" of billets available to them. They put in for the positions they want and detailers look at that "wish list" and select them for a position.
