I'll tell you what has amazed. I haven't seen the vast majority of my classmates in 2.5 years. I haven't really even been able to talk to most of them. For some, we ran into each other in port calls, and that was great.
This weekend was the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC, and while I may not be a marathoner, at this time, I wish I would have done the 10K. That isn't the point. The point is, my best friend from the Academy, my roommate for three semesters, my company mate, and my classmate (all the same person) came to visit. He was running the race. He was stationed in Kodiak, AK the past two years and is now in grad school. I hadn't seen him in 2.5 years, but we talked now and then. NOTHING had changed. At the race, we had three other classmates show up...and NOTHING had changed, except where everyone was stationed. We caught up, ran into some 1/c (who were 4/c when we were 1/c) and then we headed out.
The Coast Guard is a small community, you will often see people you served with years before. Almost always you know someone who knows someone you know. Smaller than that is the Coast Guard Academy, and smaller than that, your class. You will go YEARS without seeing people, and when you do see them, it's like it was yesterday, and you pick up where you left off. From what I hear this is no exception, it is the rule.
