Likeliness of an Appointment with a Principal Nomination

Recently I have received a principal nomination from my MOC to USNA. I have passed the CFA and believe I am academically qualified (top 4% of class, 1340 SAT). On the condition that I am considered qualified by DODMERB what are the odds that I would receive an appointment and what can I do now to increase my odds of receiving an appointment?

Depends. I do not believe the Academy has to take principal noms first and foremost (unlike other service Academies). Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, where are you from? If it is a super competitive area (MD/VA, etc.), then you have a lot of people in the mix. If you are from smaller, less represented area, then I would think the chances are higher.

As for what else you can do? If your app is completed, your nom secured, and DoDMERB all in the system, then the hay is in the barn. Go for a run, relax and enjoy the holidays, spend time with your family, and just let the process play out. That's about it!

If you are found qualified by DoDMERB or get any required waiver, and you have a PNOM and passed CFA, that leaves the category USNA usually doesn’t tell you your status. It’s not just test scores and GPA, it’s everything else they evaluated in your application. You won’t know if you were qualified in that area.

If USNA deems you fully qualified, with a PNOM it is very likely you will be offered an appointment. There is a tiny variance in the statute that does not require USNA to do so, but they will usually do so, in the interests of maintaining good relationships with elected officials.

Depends which part. There are urban areas of the state and some incredibly rural parts. If your MoC doesn't have a ton of applicants, then there is certainly a high chance you would be in for consideration with a principal nom.

Curious how you know you were given the principal nom? Not all assign that, and not all tell even if they do.

Again, assuming you are DoDMERB approved. Without that and/or the USNA medical waiver, all bets are off.

I would say the odds are better than they were prior to your nomination. BUT, one cannot say with 100% certainty that you will be guaranteed an appointment.

Congratulations on your nomination, that is a great accomplishment. Keep checking off items on your to-do list, follow up with any requests (if needed) with DODMERB/DODMETS and keep working on Plans B-Z.

The office receives about 35-40 applications a year for their nominations.
