Hey all,

Would anyone know how to find a list of all past and present generals? Of all ranks?

Does such a thing exist?

Thanks!

Why on earth would you need such a list?

You also did not specify what Nation or branch? Do you include Admiralty? The USCG?

I would think that the Pentagon might have such a list of Army, Navy, AF and Marine Corps for the U.S. Generals and Admirals. Not sure if it would include the NG, or CG though. It might be confidential as part of human resource records, however.

You're right, I guess I left out a lot.

US Generals, Army. Just wanted to see if my grandfather was telling the truth after all these years ;)

I didn't consider that it might be confidential. I figured if anyone on the internet would know where to find such a list it would be here.

A far simpler task would be to find a copy of his DD-214. (Unless he won't let you see it).

That should show his discharge Grade, Rate or Rank.

Keep in mind that as of Nov 1, 2018, there were 14 Generals (4 star), 49, Lieutenant Generals (3 star), 118 Major Generals (2 star) and 141 Brigadier Generals in the U.S Army. That is 322 Army flag officers on that date alone.* You now want to go back to most likely the 1960's or 1970's to find your grandfather on some list. Tough task, but maybe someone else has an idea.

Not sure he has it anymore, he graduated from USMA in 1949. He doesn't get out much anymore 😂

I'm heading to his house sometime this year, I'll ask him whenever I'm in his neighborhood.

Have you tried googling his name? There are a lot of lists on line, depending on when he served. There could/should/might be news articles as well.

If he graduated USMA he will have a Cullum Number. Find that via the West Point Association of Graduates. They have a list of West Point Grads they keep.

Well, I found what I was looking for.

It turns out he enlisted during WWII and then went to West Point after the war ended.

That's dedication right there

Still searching for records on his appointment to the rank of General

If you don't find him on a list, back in those days there were "Tombstone " promotions. An O-6 when Retired would be promoted to O-7 on the Retired List.

Jarhead,
My father also entered the Army ( circa 1943) as enlisted, attended USMA 1944-1948 ( National Champion Football Team), retired as O=9 in 1977. , He was extremely proud of his only grandson having graduated from USNA in 2012 .

@Jarhead713 If you PM me his name I can look him up in the WP Register of Graduates. For each graduate it lists each career step while in the service and the rank at which they retired out.
