Hello. I looked everywhere but couldn't find USNA policies regarding this.

Currently, I work under/help operate a LLC for a shoe company. I was wondering if I can continue doing this while I enter the Academies or will I have to close or transfer ownership? Just wanted to ask before I make any moves as I-day is coming closer.

Mids are not allowed to hold jobs other than USNA employment. So while I don't know the specifics, pretty sure you'll be prohibited from owning/operating a business. Suggest you go directly to the source to get the straight scoop before I-Day, as you don't want to be worrying about this issue during plebe summer/year.

There is the “is this allowed” part that @MidCakePa said. Then there is also the “is this practical” part. And that’s a hard no. You won’t have access to communications for plebe summer. Beyond that, you won’t have TIME to deal with any of it. Just ask the oodles of BF/GF’s who dump their plebes, bc they didn’t have time to tend to the relationship. No time to text.

Your mind/body is all USNA. Especially plebe year....

You will soon have a full-time career -- the USN. Whether during PS or Ac Year or when you graduate, you cannot serve two masters (the military and your LLC). You owe it to yourself, your shipmates, the men and women you lead, those who lead you, the USN/USMC and the country to focus on your military service. If you really want to stay with your business . . . well, you don't have to show up on I-Day. Not being flip -- it's an option.

Midshipmen Regulations, or MidRegs, governs most aspects of midshipmen life. See link below. Para 4.4 is germane.

The reality is that you are expected to give 100% to your midshipman life, and there usually isn’t time for anything else. There are also restrictions as to what you can do on base, the use of govt communications channels, and during duty hours.

Later on, as an officer, but usually not during sea duty (communications and time again), there may be room for a side gig. The nature and type of any outside employment or business for officer and enlisted is governed by Navy Regulations. Officers usually have to consult a Navy JAG to ensure no conflict of interest. Any hint of interference with ability to carry out expected duties and performance is career-impactful.
