LOA and nomination

In a competitive state, there can absolutely be strong candidates on the list of ten for each of the senators. Not uncommon for all 10 to get admitted.

Absolutely true, and admittedly it is a complex system that is different for each MOC. However, every one of those other 9 on the hypothetical list had to have another place to have their appointment charged. Only one appointment can be charged to each slate. There can be appointments to the others on the slate, but they cannot be charged to this slate and need another place to charge the appointment. So, if another name gets added to this list of 10 due to the LOA holder not applying for the nom, it still doesn't add another appointment, it only adds another nom. The appointment is the goal, not just having a nomination.

Agreed. It is a complex system and no one knows for sure where they ultimately get charged and what all of the charging sources are (sups noms, etc). My point was simply that with an LOA it only takes one nom to get in. There is no need for another. You have met the requirement with the one nom. (Now you still have to stay healthy, etc... That's another discussion)

By not taking that additional nom, it could potentially open up a nom slot for another individual to have a chance to be admitted and possibly charged elsewhere. Obviously, appointment is the goal, but you can't win the dance contest if you don't even have a ticket to get in to compete. Without the opened nom slot, they would never have the chance to get past the nom step and be considered for an appointment. If you are a highly competitive candidate with any nom, chances are they will do what they can to get you in the door by using any/all ways to put the puzzle together. If you don't get a nom, you aren't even a puzzle piece.

How terrible would your grades have to be to sabotage your LOA, hypothetically? I try to do the best I can in my classes, of course, but would a 3.4 sink you even though you had a higher GPA for the last couple of years? I understand the other LOA requirements are to stay in good physical shape, medically qualify, get nominated, don't go to prison, ect...

That is a question for your counsellor.

My question to you is, How terrible would you feel if you let your grades slip and it sabotaged your LOA, hypothetically?

Recommend that if your grades are currently slipping, you buckle down and get to work and not let that happen! The SA path will not get any easier.......

DD (who has an LOA and a Nom) is operating under the premise that everything you can add to your file to improve it is important. You will have to upload your 7th semester transcript, and a drop in GPA would stand out, IMHO...........She took a heavy senior year schedule, to avoid the senior slide and to be able to add that to her WCS............As I have read time and again on this forum..........the appointment is the goal, and you have to keep moving forward, not treading water.........

DD did not know who she was "charged" until she received a Flag flown over the Capitol on her graduation date from her Senator. One year at parents summer greeting we had 13 USNA appointments from a very small State. Don't sweat the small stuff. Concentrate on you CFA and keep up your grades. Good luck.

A GPA is cumulative. Having a higher GPA from the last couple of years would help to offset a lower quarter/semester. Trust me when I say that its a lot easier to lower your GPA than it is to raise it!

My DD was recruited for two sports at Army. While on her official visit she interacted with both sports and coaches. There were nine total recruits at WP during that time between those two sports. Of those nine recruits, only three of them (including my DD) are at WP today!

My DD said that almost all of of those women recruits had LOA's. I can't give you exact reasons why the other six aren't at WP, but I'd be willing to bet academics played a significant part in the decision process.

It only helps to have more than one nom if you aren’t sure that you’re going to get an appointment. But with an LOA, if I’m not mistaken, you are guaranteed an appointment as long as you have 1 nom and are 3Q’d.
You can have an LOA and NOT get an appointment if there is anything that USMA is requiring you to clear before a set date. It happened in the Class of 2o21.
