LOA and Presidential

I received an LOA on Dec 23rd, about a week after submitting my paperwork for a Presidential nomination. My MOC nomination process is finished and while I have 3 noms to USNA, I have none to USAFA. The MOC offices are working to find me a nom before the slates are submitted, but in case they can’t, I’m worried the 100 slots might have already been charged.

Is an appointment likely with only a Presidential nom? If so, how long is the waiting game supposed to continue?

For what it's worth, I had a friend receive an appointment with a Presidential nom in February last year. I feel like they probably ensure that all the Presidential slots aren't taken before the general appointment months (Feb/March). In my opinion, you're not at risk of losing an appointment chance due to Presidential slots all already being taken. Maybe shoot an email to your admissions counselor and ask to be sure, though.

Thank you, now it’s just time to wait I guess...

The LOA is an assurance from the Academy. If you do your part, they will offer you an appointment. They may slot you against the 100 Presidential but they can also slot you as an Additional Appointee later in the process if you are not in the first 150 off the NWL.

With the LOA, you are in good shape. Have you completed the medical portion?

Just a quick question....before someone can be given an appointment from a congressional state, all of the candidates on that slate must have been reviewed by the board right?

Generally yes, admissions has been ranking you since you started your application. If someone is not going to be competitive, they may not even make the "board" review. But all competitive candidates will be evaluated before the slate is ranked and resolved.

Yes, I was granted a waiver for a broken bone last year and orthodontics. Everything is complete and I'm just waiting for my Presidential to show up in the portal. As I only have nominations to USNA, Presidential is my only nom.

Well, I got mine in the blink of an eye. I was shocked. I think it took about 5 days to pop up in the portal from the moment I mailed the form out, somewhere at the very end of October, around 27th. But like it was mentioned by someone above, people drop out of the application process for various reasons and nominations get reassigned. Just be patient and good luck.

Are you referring to the appointment or the nom? Either way that’s reassuring to hear.

I also saw my Presidential in the portal fairly quickly, definitely within two weeks after mailing it but I think it was closer to one. If you don’t mind me asking, what are your stats? Test scores, GPA, sports etc

My father was prior Air Force, having served over 8 years active duty. I was told that I was not eligible for the Presidental nomination because my father didn't retire. It is a little scetchy in the candidate booklet stating members who are active duty and having served at least 8 years of continous service. Is this an AND/OR or has to be active duty or retired having served at least 8 years?
Thank you.

Here’s how it’s written on the USNA site:
“An unlimited number of presidential nominations are available for children and legally adopted children of career officer and enlisted personnel of the armed forces, active or reserve, including the Coast Guard. One hundred candidates may be appointed with these nominations each year. A parent in the reserve must be serving as a member of a reserve component and be credited with at least eight full years of service (a minimum of 2880 points) or must be entitled to retired pay except that he or she is not yet sixty years old. Otherwise, the parent must currently be on active duty (other than for training) and have served continuously for at least eight years or have been retired with pay or granted retired or retainer pay.”

So - a parent can be currently on active duty, or currently in the active Reserve, but has to have 8 years service. Or, they can be retired, which is usually after 20 years, though it can be earlier for special reasons. Plus the other situations described. Your dad - and I appreciate his time in uniform - served 8 years and separated. If he is not receiving retired pay, or serving in the active Reserves, I think that’s why the Pres nom criteria are not met.

Thank you very much Sir! I believe you have answered my question.

You are very welcome. I appreciate the polite courtesy of your “sir,” but I qualify for a “ma’am.” [emoji16]

Mine? If you send me a message I can give you a couple stats but I’m not comfortable posting directly on here

SAT 730 each, GPA 3.95, CFA is scheduled for the beginning of January as everybody's on vacation, including myself. I also have a dual citizenship and fluent in French and Russian as I've lived abroad for many years. My father is a US Air Force O-5.
