LOA for class of '23

congrats @atanglejwoodg !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

do you have any idea what triggered the LOA? or was it just a random surprise to you ?

I own/run my own company and would say I'm very well rounded; academics has always been my biggest strength. Unless you're asking in terms of test scores, grades, or other specifics....

owning your own company: thats cool!! I was thinking more along the line of either being an athlete, like are you planning to play on a varsity team or maybe you completed your application (nothing left open including BGO and DODMERB) really early? As a parent of a first time candidate, I'm so clueless about the whole process and just curious to learn all the details of how it works. :) thanks for the info and congrats again, I hope it all leads to what you want!!!

I wouldn't say very early, but I finished it the week the application board met; and no, I do not plan on playing a varsity sport. I do play three varsity sports in high school, however.

I attended the NASS last June. I did NOT receive a LOA last September. But I did receive my APPOINTMENT offer last Friday October 26th. Needless to say I’m still in shock on how early they have started GIVING out the APPOINTMENTS offers.

I too got the LOA on 26th October and took it to my MoC interview on 27th October. The Panel congratulated me and asked me if USNA is my first choice now. Without a doubt it is now :) I hope I get the nomination now.

Do LOAs only come out on Thursdays after the admissions board meets or can you get a change on your portal at any time?

This past early September, I received an LOA for the Class of '23 at USNA. As I still need a nomination and know the LOA in itself is no guarantee of getting one, should I inform the offices of the Congressmen/Senators in my state of this? Or, alternatively, should I just bring a physical copy of the letter to the interview?

Look at your LOA letter carefully and see if it is cc'd to your nominating sources. When my sons got an LOA, it was cc'd to the senators and congressman. I recommend sending a copy of the letter to the service academy coordinator of your respective sources. They already knew about the LOA without my sons having to say a word.

So does USNA always notify MOCs when they issue an LOA? DS sent his application packages to all of his MOCs last week, and he received LOA on his portal today. None of his MOC's do interviews, and just notify in November. So, is DS supposed to contact them to update his application or let them know he has an LOA?

They are supposed to notify the MOC but I, personally, would never rely on the system. I'd make a copy of whatever your notification was, mail it in, and ask that it be added to your file. Alternatively you can call MOC's office to see if they have been notified and if not what steps you need to take to get it added to your file. I've worked in large organizations for too long to rely on any "system" for anything that's important. Just my 2 cents.

kinnem's advice is spot on! Usually, the LOA is cc'd to the MOCs. But, like kinnem says, I would still send it to each MOC just in case they missed it. Don't be a victim of a bureaucratic faux pas. Don't brag about it. Just send it and let it stand for itself.

Last year my son asked his BGO if he should notify the MOCs about the LOA. His BGO said he should, just to be sure. My son's email to the MOCs stated something like, "My Blue and Gold officer instructed me to inform you that I have received a Letter of Assurance..." It was a good way to notify without bragging, as @Memphis9489 suggests.

"My Blue and Gold officer instructed me to inform you that I have received a Letter of Assurance..." I

I would suggest wording it "My BGO suggested I inform you ........" (instead of instructed me ).

A subtle difference in wording, but hey, I'm lawyer and thats what I do ...I can't read anything without wanting to change it. It used to drive my daughters crazy --the first thing I did when they gave me papers to read is grab my red pen).

It must be a universal Lawyer thing. Our Lawyer at work and I had a running joke. When ever I wrote a letter or document and handed it to him for review I would also hand him a pencil. He would always find something on the page that needed just a tweak. We would always laugh.

OldNavyBGO, I agree with you. Subtle difference, but I view the former wording as placing the ownership on the BGO and it isn’t the BGO’s application process, it’s the candidates. The candidate is ultimately the one who decides whether to send it in or not.

I was paraphrasing, but you got my curiosity going. I asked my son if he still had the emails he sent. They said, "I have been advised to inform you..."

I’m of the “straight at it” school, FWIW:

“I would like to add the attached document to my USNA nomination application. I was pleased and honored to receive a letter of assurance from the Naval Academy, informing me they would offer an appointment should I be fortunate enough to receive a nomination.” Plus the usual opening and closing niceties.

More active then passive, it’s the applicant realizing this is an important document, and in a professional manner, requesting it be added to consideration of his or her package. No one else in play.
